TIRE SIZES
05/27/11 at 10:07:29

I have a 1966 ls650 and I'm turning it into a bobber,I'm just doing it one step at a time, but anyway, my tires are in good shape but I really would love to put wider tires (front and rear) right now I ahve a 100/90-19 on the fron and 140/80-15 on the rear, front fender is gone and the rear fender is about to be replaced with either a trailer fender or since I work in a motorcycles dealerhip I got my hands on a Yamaha Stratoliner front fender that it might do the work, anyway my question is what is the widest i con go on tires (front and rear) withouth any rubbing issues specially with the belt, I would love to put a 130 on the front but I've gone thru all my parts catalogs and the widest tire I found is a 120/70/-19, can I put a 16" wheel on the front and out of what kind of bike?

Any help will be apreciate it!

You probably meant a 1986. Thats the first year for them. You could always have just the rim from another bike laced onto the front hub so you can leave the brakes unchanged. A 16" Harley rim would give a wider tire. I had a honda rigged that way once.

Ha ha my bad, I meant a 1996, I didn't think about that will the new wheel spokes fit in the hub?

Any ideas for the rear?

Now if you're in the mood for lace,  Cool  someone laced an intruder rim on the savage hub.

Here's the link for fitting a much larger rear tire from the Tech Page... http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1181496112

The narrowest point between the forks is about 4". You can go with a smaller rim, but you need to make sure there's enough room for the rotor and caliper.

There are two clearance issues in the back -- the belt and the front of the swingarm. The maximumdiameter for a rear tire is 26" unless you modify the swingarm.

I think the 15" rim limits your tire choices. A 16" rim greatly expands your choices, and 17" opens you up to the vast array of sportbike tires. You'd be looking at putting a front on the rear because of width limitations.

Changing rim sizes means all new spokes. So there's that cost to figure in.

There's a thread about cast wheels but you might look at the models involved as the same bikes are available with spoked wheels in limited amounts.

C'est moi! It was fun! 150/90 is the biggest baloon you can put on stock 2.75 inch rim. Even that is an overkill, really. And it should not rub. I have 160/80-15 on 4'' rim and had to move both pulleys, cut a part of the muffler bracket... there's more... say goodbuye to belt cover and front pulley cover... or shim and bend metal.
If you're in lacing wheels - find a 4 inch 1400 intruder rim, that's what I laced to stock hub.
