Another Raptor Petcock Convert
05/14/11 at 19:32:09

Installed mine today and MAN what a difference. My 2004 w/nearly 8k had been stalling. Rode 100 miles after install and she ran like a dream!!  Super easy install and I capped off the vacuum line ala Digger.

Thanks everybody for the tips AND the Ron Ayer's link to the part.

How much did it cost ya?

My bike is a 06  but it just broke 1500 miles.
Kinda thinking if I don't need it, I don't want to spend green on it

Good that it fixed your problems.

For me, I'll always defend the saftey feature of the vacuum petcock, and I'd probably kit the valve if and when it gives me trouble.

No, you shouldn't need one yet.  It costs around $25 and is easy to install.  Makes the tank easier to remove also.  But Routy makes a good point about the safety feature.  At least if the bike goes down the gas will shut off when the engine quits and if it's working properly you don't have to remember to shut the fuel off when you park it.

Petcock war again, I guess.

Everyone agrees that the stock vacuum actuated petcock fails and causes trouble for the owner.

Some (including me) say jest yank that durn stock petcock unit off and bounce it off the wall a few times in revenge for all the BS it caused you.

Others jest love the little trouble prone vacuum sucking gas bleeding not reliably opening little thing, and they want you to spend time, $$ and effort to troubleshoot it and try to repair it.

The reason that they give for this is "gasoline in the oil" which does happen when a carburetor float malfunctions.   Funny thing, gas in the oil seems to happen more often with the stock petcock than it does with the Raptor replacement.

Grin   Grin   Grin

(why?  I dunno -- don't ask me to explain the 1,001 ways a failed vac petcock can make your bike run rich -- and then run some of that liquid gas down the vac line to the manifold, then past the piston down into the sump)

Now, if you go with the repair it folks, you will get another chance or two later on to reconsider and go with the Raptor replacment folks -- 'cause guess what happens to your rebuilt/repaired vac petcock given enough time and miles .....

Grin

Guess which one is cheaper,  a repair kit or a Raptor replacement ....

And as an added benefit, when you go raptor you can take your gas tank off without having a big hassle.

Wink

Like OF says,... the vacuum petcock causes more gas leaks than it prevents.
It is commonly thought of as a safety feature, but I have never read anything official saying so.
I don't see it as a safety, but a convenience feature.

Can anybody find some advertising or something from Suzuki promoting this a safety feature?...
It's definitely not mandated, because many bikes don't have it.

so?

..... is so too .....

you can hear them talk about the vac petcock hanging on to what's left of the gas tank if you wait patiently until the very very end of the video (firemen & people talking in background).

Seems to me they were talking about the petcock not being turned off and the hose cracked.

It was the thin vac hose that goes to the vac port on the petcock .....

Moral of the story is don't smoke while riding.

He only mentioned 1 hose on the petcock so it must've been a raptor type petcock.

Yep, he did say hose now didn't he?   You got a fuel line and a vac hose, so he must be referring to that thin walled vac hose when he said the petcock failure caused the explosion and fire.

After all, manual petcocks have been used for over a hundred years now with no unnecessary complications.

========================

Vac actuated petcocks, now --- well their very name is synonymous with complications and troubles of all sorts.
