17mm Spark Plug socket?
04/14/11 at 08:33:42
I'm having a hard time tracking down the right spark plug socket for my 87 Savage.
The Clymers book says 17mm. And what size spark plug should I be looking for?
Am I missing something?

If I am correct, the spark plug is most likely not metric, that'd be 11/16 instead.

It is a 17mm.
None of the 'standard' spark plug sockets that you get at the auto store will work.
Just get a 17mm deep well socket. Cut a short section from a rubber spark plug boot and glue into the bottom of the socket. This will hold the spark plug in place so it doesn't fall out.

Blow the crap outta th hole before you pull the plug,,
Thin wall sockets are available at the Big Box stores, in the lawn & garden stuff..
I keep a spark plug boot handy, once the plug is oose, stick the boot on & use that to spin it out, use that boot to start it back in,, anti sieze is your friend.

Good advice to blow out the hole for sure!
I just take it for granted that everyone knows to use anti-seize, but definitely use anti-seize.....more is better than less.

11/16" = .688
18mm = .708
I got a worn out 11/16 that'll fit the plug, but very tight.
Go to a lawnmower store, look for one stamped out of steel tube.

Auto Zone has an 18 mm that's slim enough to fit. I think mine is 3/8 drive and cost around $5.

...or for us metric users, 11/16" = 17.46mm. So unless your 17mm socket is modified it probably won't fit. I bought an 18mm spark plug socket at our equivalent to Harbour Freight/Grizzly here in Norway and it works a charm. But I don't know available that would be in the states.
