Air Filter Mod
04/12/11 at 13:25:55

Hey Guys,
I have an 87 Savage and I want to put a K&N filter coming off the carb. Does anyone know off hand what size I should be looking for?

Also, I've heard guys talk about resetting the carb. Is that necessary, and how easy is it?

I bought this cone filter for less than $10 and I'm happy with it. (60mm)

That looks great. Simple is what I like.

What about issues with the carb and tuning. This is my first bike and I am inexperienced but want to learn.

Any suggestions?

If this is your first bike I wouldnt screw around too much at once. Wait on the filter and read about rejetting the stock carb for stock setup. After you feel you've got a good handle on that go ahead and swap muffler/air filter.

I've only done some minor tweaking of my settings so I'm not a carb guru, Lancer is your man, but he's been laid up due to a mishap. Others on here can help you out with the proper adjustments. Here is Lancer's tuning guide though...(keep in mind altitude does have an effect on how lean/rich these bikes run-I'm at about 4500' and it's pretty good with the stock settings, those at sea level have more adjusting to deal with it seems like)

Thanks.
Guess I'll stick to the stock air filter for now.

If you're not riding in dirt, you're not going to hurt much by changing to a cone filter,......if its not more restrictive than the stock. (small ones likely are)
And you sure don't want to be rejetting just because you changed to a cone filter that most likely is not any freer flowing than stock.

Yea, get the air filter you like.

Look for jet kits on eBay, most come with instructions, it's not hard at all to do. Just have to be extra careful with little carb parts but it can be done with just a screw driver.

I went from this concoction that the previous owner dreamed up to the cone filter directly mounted to the carb, which in my case I believe is less restrictive now. (and looks better too) (the small cone filter in this pic is on the breather tube and is not the one I bought on ebay)

Does anyone have that big ass cone filter coming through the side of the bike like some old style harleys?

If you stick the filter into the air flow, tuning will be a challenge...

Is there a guide somewhere on this site on how the install the K&N cone filter mod? I'm thinking something kind of like the guides to install the dyna muffler. I recall looking a month or so back but couldn't find anything.
