Think I wanna cry - need advice
03/19/11 at 18:19:17

Ok, I just did the plug cap fix, got everything buttoned back up, did all my checks, went to fire the bike up and nothing but click  Angry  Starter would not turn ( i thought)  loosened up side cover (torqued too tight) and starter turns but does not start (motor turns over but sounds like has too much compression and not strong enough starter?)  Was able to push start the bike (good thing).  question is how hard is this decomp valve/selonoid to adjust?  I set it the way advised in the tech section but doesnt seem to be right.  Also measured it when actuated by pushing the button and instead of reading 4mm where I set it, it jumped out to 6-7mm.  Is this right or do I need to set it by actuating it instead of pushing it out by hand?  Please help me solve this mystery  :'(

Very common problem, you got the washers in the wrong place.
The washers go on either side of the gear with 2 different sized teeth.
unless it's a pre-90, which has no washers.

Yeah that darn washer fell out when I took the cover off  Angry  Didnt know where it went.  think I put it on wrong gear.  Does one go on the other gear- one without 3 sets of teeth?  not sure of name of it but goes between starter and that 3 set gear...(idler gear?) I believe I put the washer there.  but what I am getting out of this is that the Other (3 set of teeth) gear had a washer on both sides of it- that would cause the problem with starting?

The idle gear doesn't get any washers.

Thank you V.  Its amazing what a washer in the wrong place will do... looks like I gotta pull the darn side cover Again..good thing I ordered another gasket. lol.  Still gotta figure out how to tell if I got the decomp adjusted correctly other than trial and error.

if you're carefull, you can pop the case and not tear the gasket.
but always good to have a spare.

If you think that you will be pulling the sidecover again use grease on the engine side of the gasket and silicon sealer on the cover side. The silicon glues the gasket to the cover while the grease keeps the gasket from sticking to the engine. It helps keep the gasket from tearing if you need to go back in there again.

like a bearing grease? Im assuming just a light coat of both things on their respective sides as well.

Yup regular old bearing grease or white grease, a thin skin on one side of the gasket with a skin of silicon on the side cover. Torque the bolts up snug till the silicon sets then finish tightening it down. I used to do that on a old hot rod I built that had a solid cam in it, the thing was a real beast. Had to pull the valve covers a lot to set the lash  Wink. I ended up glueing the gaskets into the valve covers and lightly greasing the mating surface on the heads. It allows you to reuse the gasket a few times before it rips apart. It's worth a try.

I just tighten the decomp cable to where it has a little wiggle room in the cable when it's down...
