Instead of the russian rifle I changed my mind after reading all the negitive things about it.So I went and got the "Kentucky rifle " kit,it was marked down from $269 to $199, so I snapped it up,pictures will be forthcoming as I progress, allthough it's mostly sanding and polishing, I will take my time and make a super job of it.Just one more thing to leave my Son, Oh ! it's 50 cal. Percussion, as apposed to "Flintlock"

Good pick, Mick.

A BP long gun that was hand-finished by your Daddy's hands will be cherished by a kid as a family heirloom.

My daughter asked for 2 specific rifles -- my 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and my first 8x57 German Mauser because she watched me build them from old ugly military guns into things of accuracy and beauty which took about the entire time she was growing up.

To her, they have a lot of me in them.   They have some of her in them too.

She's right.    I gave her the Swede now because it kicks very gently and it was the better of the two anyway.   I kept the other one still because I ain't near done with it yet.

Plus, you will enjoy the doing of it ....

i've been thinking hard about that exact same kit, mick. looks like it would be a really satisfying build, but not to high a difficulty level as long as you're slow & careful.  definitely put up some pics!

i bought my first muzzleloader this past year - it was a kit somebody else built - .45 flintlock Hawken.  it's a lot of fun to shoot plus we have an extra month of deer season for flintlocks in PA!  Now if I can just get the durn deer to stand still!

So far on this kentucky rifle kit I have found two machine screws missing,
I can pick em local,a few things do not line up and need sanding and filing, a grinding wheel works to. Just take your time ,and you will be fine..I was working on it this morning and got pissed off when I found the two screws missing,so I stopped working rather than screw it up.
I will send picks soon.         Mick

Mick -

1.  Where did you buy the kit?

2.  Are their multiple kits available from different manufacturers?

3.  What caliber is it?

4.  What's the final weight of it after assembly?

5.  What made you pick this particular kit?

Hi all!  I really like Russian rifles!  I have 5 and while it's tough to find brass, I've had good results with all of them.  They're cheap, tough, accurate, and shoot cast boolits really well because of the deep, deep, rifling grooves.

I got the Cabella's .50 caliber Hawken flintlock kit three years ago and blew a .50 caliber hole through my neighbors travel trailer  Shocked. The rifle came out real nice even though nothing lined up to begin with. I used brass screws to hold the but plate on with and used a big belt sander to rough out the stock and get all the brass close. The rest took hours of hand sanding. The Traditions .50 caliber flintlock trapper pistol was the next project and only took about a week. Both are a blast to shoot with the pistol accurate to about 50 yards and the rifle good to about 125 yards. Are you going to blue ther barrel or go for the traditional brown color? Have fun putting it together and shooting it.

The Kentucky long rifle is one of the most accurate long guns ever made. In the 1960’s George Chinn (“The Machinegun” 4 volumes) challenged the best that the Marine Corps had to offer to a shootout at 100 yards using steel sights. Now granted the Kentucky boys were very good, and looked good in their buckskins; but they shot the pants off the best riflemen the Marines had to offer… with 100 year old technology. It aint still around because it’s old’. It’s still around because it’s good!

I got the kit at BiMart a local hardware store .
their are several kits available, go to,www.traditionsmuzzle.com
 tel# 860 388 4656. fax 860 388 4657.
it's a 50 caliber
Weight,  heavy,I'm not sure but it feels alot heavier than my army rifle a "short model lee Enfield."
I always liked the look of the kentucky rifle,it came on sale so I snapped it up.
And to who ever asked ,the instructions called for blueing, and I just happen to have some.
