What's the best method

What's the best way to start the bike after a long winter . Do you set it to prime and start it with the choke , or set to prime then back to normal before you start it? Thanks.

Is there a prime on the original Savage vacuum petcock? If you have a prime set it to prime and try starting while on prime with choke on. If you smell gas, you've flooded it.

It depends on the bike. After mine sits a long time, I crank it the way I always do. It just has to turn over a little bit longer before it fires. If it gets flooded first, you have to wait for it to dry out, or grind on the starter without choke. (Not recommended) With mine, a good hot battery is what does the trick.

Mine does not like the choke, may start with choke after a long time sitting but it wont run with choke on for long. During the riding season I never use the choke to start it.

If I twist the gas, I flood it. If its been sitting long, put it on prime & wait a few seconds for the bowl to fill. TRy 1/2 choke, no go, go full choke. Mak Sure th battery is fully charged.

But after the bowl is full, would you put the petcock back on ON or leave it on PRIME to start the bike?

As long as the petcock is healthy, it wont matter once the bowl is full.

Ooops, as long as the vacuum line is good,, leave it on prime,,

Yes, you can leave it on prime to start it. No harm w/ leaving it on prime forever, but then it would be the same as any bike that has an "on", "off" and "reserve", and if the float valve ever sticks, it could drain gas into the crankcase oil, or all over the floor. The vacuum operated petcock is a saftey valve,.....in that the only time gas will gravity flow from the tank is while the engine is being cranked or running, so therefore it elliminates the need to manually shut the gas off when stopping the motor. I like the feature, but some consider it a problem waiting to happen, and opt to change out the valve to a manual controlled valve.
But whenever you suspect a lack of fuel problem, turn it to PRIME !

Prime flows fuel to the carb even if the engine isnt running. ON delivers only when the engine is making vacuum & pulling on the diaphragm in the petcock. Unless the diaphragm is busted, then its just like prime.Except that the vacuum line will pull gas.
