For cold weather starting, when the oil is cold and thicker making the pump get higher pressures, you need a gauge at least 60 psig.
Or, what I eventually did is put a small valve on the line (at the gauge) and shut off the line when it was below about 60 deg F. When the engine warmed up, I would reach over the top and turn the valve to the on position.
