Replacing Shifter Peg ??

I'm considering replacing my rubber shifter peg with a custom one and was wondering if anyone else has done this ?
The peg mount itself is welded to the shift arm, and I want to hacksaw this off flush and drill through the arm and install a bolt on peg. Any thiughts or opinions on this ?
