The road less traveled
11/24/10 at 17:56:28

I would like to start a thread about the road less traveled.
Be it paved or dirt road no matter.
It should be a place frequented by few, and preferably of scenic interest.
It should be a place you went by motorcycle.
Try to filter out any national parks, they are not less traveled.
I want to see photos preferably of places that only those who wander
see.
I post a few to start it off and may add some later as I scan som old alblums.  Unfortunately in my younger riding days, I did not commonly carry a camera.

That should be enough stuff to start a thread.  Can any of you identify the lighthouse?  The road less traveled to it can no longer be traveled except by foot.  The last 200 yards was a harrowing 3 foot wide trail cut into the face of a cliff.  About 400 feet straight down to rocks and the sea.  It has since weathered so that only foot traffic can now go there.

I'll give you a hint.  It is more than 5000 miles from The great lakes.

I like the road less traveled idea, sadly, I did most of that when I was single, some years prior to cell phones & mini video cams & such.

Used to camp with the kids - Maine and Canada (before the US demanded passports) but I always figured that mountains and view meant hiking. At the Bay of Fundy I was surprised to find "auto trails" up the mountain for the views! Struck me as kind of thoughtful!.  I like Southern New England for the backroads that are hundreds of years old and barely there - when walking was how it was done - cutting corners. In Maine it is the logging roads-  4 wheel drive and mud and puddles and ice and snow. Being the first down a road after a snowfall - before the plows is always a special moment for me! Smiley

My dad's sister, my aunt, also my god-mother, remarried Glenn.   He got a motorcycle in case his motorhouse broke.  On an AAA map listed a spring a couple of miles south of the Interstate.  So we went looking for it.  Didn't find it.  Back in L.A. I got Topo Maps, looked for where we had went.  We had been within 5o feet.  Next year rode straight to it.  There were many gold mines marked, we looked at several over the next 6-8 years.

We went to where the roads less followed.  By the treads of people covering our tracks we could count how many, if any.  The Cook Mine was difficult to find.  Up the wash and back around, could not find the road.  Finally got serious, "map, mountains, check, if I am exactly here I can walk up this rise and see the road."  Did.  "We are exactly .6 miles west."  Look closely at as we neared. GOT IT!  The road had not been used for a while.  A bush in the center of the road was two feet tall.  Would be a cinch with GPS.

Don't know why I was on the truck this time, but this is what I call a Good Road.

It's true. In some of the places I have been in the Oregon desert, that would be the freeway.
Aparently one of you has a T dub.  Gret exploration vehicle.

OK, I posted the photos before, but this seems like such a good place for them...

The road over Mosquito Pass Colorado on the Leadville side of the pass:

Yeah, it's where I turned around before totally frying the clutch on my Bonnie:

But I did go back a few days later with the Xterra from the other direction:

And we crested the pass:

And met one of the locals on the way:
