Yup, I was a member of the World Karting Association for two years and got out on Pocono International Raceway for hot laps and a race. Some of the laydown karts have been clocked at 140mph. My best speed was only around 95mph which is plenty fast enough when your is butt only an inch off the asphalt. I ran a modified Briggs and Straton 5 hp which was way outclassed by most of the field.  Cheesy

My brother-in-law raced karts- mostly sprint- and was north American champ a couple of times, I think. He raced a sprint kart at Mosport once with the laydown guys and placed.

quite a few years ago (mid 90's perhaps) i was at the North Carolina Motor Speedway (commonly known as Rockingham) before NASCAR stopped racing there....anyway it was a Saturday when they ran the NASCAR Busch series and they had a WKA event as a prelim to the big race that day - anyway getting to the point here eventually - they were running twin engine laydowns and the pole was 135MPH the NASCAR pole that day was 128mph and the Winston Cup pole for Sunday's race was 138mph......go to say that was a pretty cool thing to watch, scary fast at times and them dudes ran wheel to wheel for a while passed on the high side down the front straight where there was not a n open groove....Awesome is about the best word i can come with to describe it...have not seen it again since then.

Theres an industrial park going in out near the house. Sure would make for a nice kart track till they get someone moved in.

To make it legal I'm sure you would have to follow some rules like safety items,ie hay bales ,a marked out track ,and the biggie ,insurance. and all kids of permits, you keep getting this land of the free thing all mixed up.

In 1965 I was reading a hot rod magazine about a strange type of supercharger for drag racing. Since a supercharger requires power to spin it, this represents power from the engine not delivered to the wheels.
Since drag racing is only for a few seconds, a novel solution was found.
A rocket motor was fitted to a turbine that spun the supercharger.  This gave a humongus boost in intake pressure without parasiting any power from the dragsters main engine.  It worked but had technical problems so they were left with a few of these rocket turbines that could produce 135 horsepower for a short period of time.
Naturally some wit decided to put one into a go-kart to drag race with.
I think it turned something like 140 in the quarter when they put a phsycotic with a death wish behind the wheel.  Hidiously fast for the go-karts of the day and extremely dangerous in that when the engine fired, it was full power until it ran out of fuel. No way to shut it off.
It was basically an aim and fire projectile with a person in it.

Funny, Mick - as much as you complain about how bad it here in the USA, you are still here.

I have explaned this many times,if it wasn't for my children and grandchildren,I would be long gone.there is very little difference between this country and the UK. I miss the people, well mannered,
polite, the food is ten times better ,as we speak I am saving up to go back for a longish visit and get something good to eat.
Does that answer your question ?
