Need help resurecting my bobber
10/04/10 at 06:34:30

OK guys, so ive finally finished my bobber project (pictures soon to come!)  my issue now is getting it to start.  need help from the gurus!

Here is the skinny.  original bike was a 95 savage with 6k miles.  ran fine before the build.

What i did to it...yanked the carb and airbox off. replaced the box with cone filter.  completely stripped the carb, cleaned, rejetted with 55 pilot and 155 main jet.  add 6 discs to my supertrapp for a total of 14 discs.  has a new stock petcock, new fuel filter.  cleanned and derusted the tank with the first two stages of the Kreem cleaner but didnt add the Kreem lining.  have 10' apes with stock cables rerouted also aftermarket avon grips.  new sparkplug as well.

status quo:  Bike starts with choke all the way out and runs really fast.  when i put the choke in the bike starts to sputter then dies.  ive tried meddling with the mixture screw to see if it was a tuning issue but nothing seemed to work.  i tried running on both prime and regular and i get the same results.  i have a transparent fuel line and i see the fuel going in and the fuel filter isnt discolored.

At my wits end and could use some help, thanks guys Undecided

throttle actually kills it when the choke is out, and dies when i put the choke in period.  it only runs at idle with the choke out, and it sounds like its running really fast

You didn't use the Kreem liner?...  Isn't that just gonna' rust up madly?...

As far as the running,... Sounds like you're way rich for some reason...  Did you put the washer under the Main jet?...
If you did,... go back to the stock main, and see what happens... I'm sure you'll be a least a little lean with it, but it will let you know if the mainjetting is the problem...

(EDIT) Oooops!,... backward thinking this morning... never mind... Huh...

easy stuff 1st...
take 4 disks out of the supertrapp... See how it goes.
then 4 more...
I think you're way lean.

adding disks makes you lean so does cone filter.

and if you can add a small straight section as long as the rubber ducky that goes between the carb and air box, it'll be better.

and check for air leaks.

ok i got two gurus giving me conflicting info.  am i lean or rich?  Serow i didnt use the kreem liner since i heard some bad stories of that happening.  i derusted it with the acid and a piece of chain and then immediately put fuel in it to avoid flash rusting.  i did the white spacer mod to 1/2 size.  i know im making it really lean with the cone and 14 disc trapp so i thought the 55 pilot and 155 main would be suitable for it.

Hint #1... you pulled out the choke and it idled.
Hint #2... every thing you did would make it run lean.

The other option is to return every thing as it was and change one thing at a time.

Okay, IF you called me a guru,, well, thats a gross overstatement.

Yes, everything you did would lean it out, but you dont have to remove disks. You can just wrap something around the exhaust & restrict it. I am running jets about your size, I have 14 disks, cut the white washer down some, about 1/3rd cut off, IIRC. Some aluminum cans & some wire or a biggo hose clamp should work.

ok tried taking out discs an i got it down to 8 discs and still no result.  it turns on and idles fast when the choke is out but if i give it gas it dies immediately, same if i put the choke in.  any ideas, do i have to yank the carb again and fiddle with it?

I know it's a PITA to go to where it last ran, but that's where you need to go.  Then make one change at a time because any one mistake could put you in never never land.

Sounds to me like it might be the carb slide sticking.....mmmm......yeah, I think that's what I'd check next....seems like you've done every thing else. Cool

ok so i removed 6 discs from the trapp making a total of 9 which is reasonable and the setup i used to have and still no change.  im starting with 1.5 turns out on the mixture screw and fiddling with it and still nothing.  again it runs with the choke out but immediately dies if i give it any throttle.  wont run at all with the choke in.  do i need to go back to the old jets?

here's what I think, for what it's worth.

If it runs at idle and doesnt when you give it gas, most likely your main jet is clogged. Idling relies on your idle jet, when you open the throttle if the main jet is clogged you get no gas, only air in the mix therefore the engine dies. Hope it makes sense.

It is running on the enricher (not really a choke), albeit fast. It dies when the throttle is opened with the enricher on. Opening the throttle effectively disables the enricher, which is normal. It then dies. It is too lean, for some reason. I would favor putting the carb back to stock and see if it will run. I have managed to assemble float assemblies incorrectly, which might make the fuel level very low and thus cause lean problems.
