longer pipe and sound
09/02/10 at 08:35:36

I have a dyna power after market pipe...

Right now it is attached to the stock header. I love the sound but have noticed that it has a bit of a harsh tone when riding at cruising speed (40-50mph). I was thinking about adding a bit of length to it by adding a piece of exhaust pipe between the header and the muffler (like maybe 4-5 inches). Plus, it won't get my brake line dirty... Smiley

Anyway, I'm curious as to whether that will change the tone to a little richer sound (meaning deeper). Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thx

If I'm seeing it right,... there is room for packing around that tube...

Drill a bunch of small holes (1/8" or smaller)(bunches!) and wrap glasspack tightly around the outside of that tube,... then put it in the pipe... and you will deepen tone...
... without packing,... difference will be subtle...
That's my guess... Huh...

Thanks serowbot but that isn't a tube in there...the exhaust is welded double walled. The resonator tab and other notches running down the side are part of the interior wall of the exhaust pipe.

I was thinking that any extra length on the pipe might change the tone a smidge but I won't count on it. Maybe I'll just leave well enough alone...actually looks kinda cool being shorter. I'll just wipe off my brake cable more often... Wink

you can mellow the sound a bit by adding the extra pipe length you mentioned IF you include a short baffle in it.  There are 3" baffles available for assorted pipe sizes and they cost less than $10, or you could make one with another piece of pipe that fits just inside the outer one.
Cut a few slits around the pipe about 1/3rd the way through the pipe and then hammer one side of the slit down so it is partially blocking the air flow, slide it in the larger pipe and you have a baffle.  Costs next to nothing to do.

This is one from Jireh Cycles that costs $1.95
looks like they used a can opener to make the darn thing

Thanks Lancer, that's pretty much what the interior of the pipe looks like right now except there is also a big tap pulled up to create some backpressure (I assume).
Anyway, has anyone ever shoved a Brass scrubbing pad into an open exhaust? Sounds wierd but I remember hearing about that somewhere...
Thx

You can get a stainless steel scrubbing pad & try that. If it isnt cool, no big loss, right?

I used an Electra glide pipe on mine. The pipe goes just past the rear brake lever. Nice deep sound too.  Length could be the key for ya. (or at least thats what she said  Wink
