Help for Mini Speedo
08/26/10 at 00:31:45

I posted a thread regarding a Mini Speedo in the Rubber Side Down! Section, but got little techical help.

I would like to ask anybody with knowledge, or even with a mini speedo on their bike to go over and offer some insight.

I'll be in the States next week (and prices are less than half price compared to Europe) and would like to buy one.
BUT
Which one ?

And... what about the cable? Which extra length cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you're not getting much help, because you are in a gray area here...
Cable length will depend on where you locate the speedo and how you route the cable...  I would do a mock up cable route with a length of aquarium tubing or something and have a cable fashioned to that length...
As far as gearing for the speedo,... I would just hook it up, and see what it reads,... then go up or down from there...
There are speedometer calibration shops... I had my 69' Mustang calibrated at one, and they fashioned a custom cable for me too... but, you won't have your bike here so, that can't do it for you, but might be willing to give some advice or give a yeah or nay on the unit you are considering...

Sorry I couldn't be more help...

Acewell's look to be in the $250.00 range...

http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=ACEwell+&_sacat=0&_dmpt=Motorcycles_Parts_Ac...

Have you considered just finding a new housing for your stock speedo and relocating it to the handlebar?...

I looked up ACEWELL's websitem, they have the scrumptious 4500 model with analog (needle) tach and digital speedo, but...
Undecided
at $450+s/h, it's definitely out of my range... it's worth more than the bike !!!  Grin

The 2700/2800 is around $100-$130 US and should work if you can find it.

Here is the thread where Jimmer talks about it on his bike.

SEROWBOT, you are correct when you say I can have the speedo calibrated...

...but this refers to a +/- 5% calibration, not a re-engeneering of a wrong buy.

A 2:1 speedo will read twice the speed (or half ?  Roll Eyes ) of a 1:1 speedo.

Were ours an electronic speedo, I would not have this kind of problem, but with a cable-driven speedo that plugs into the gearbox...
...it's nasty.

I plan to relpace the standard tank-mounted speedo with a 2" twin set "speedo+tach" on the triple tree... I can eventually find the cable, but I can't go wrong on the instrument itself.

Yes, you are right, no help from anyone who should know.

I used a TACH cable from an older GS250-750. Has both ends that are the same as the one we have now.

Ive been afraid to open this thread. Finally, decided to see. Ive seen pics of swimmers wearing regular speedos & was afraid I might be ASSaulted by the sight of a Mini Speedo.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of that!  I prefer NOT to think of those...  Eeek, guys, if you ever wanted to know if women find Speedos sexy, the honest answer is HELL NO!
