First bike - and it's a Savage
08/23/10 at 16:18:15

Hey,

I just bought my first motorcycle, it's an '03 Savage. Everything runs well, about 8,000 miles.

The only problem is that the speedo cable appears to be leaking. Anyone have this issue before? I say it's the speedo cable because oil is leaking down from beneath the gas tank and running down that cable. The engine is clean of oil, I hope ruling the engine out as the source of the problem. I'll replace the cable as soon as I can get the part.

Anyone hear of this problem before?

Thanks!

welcome!!!
when the tank is removed the speedo cable is usually unscrewed from the top of the engine case..
there is no (as of 06)suzuki part # for the lil O ring rubber that gets lost from up in the bottom end of the cable..
your hardware store has an asst. of these @ 10c or so a piece
use a 3/5 card and remove your speedo cable at the bottom and make an impression onto the 3/5 card get a couple or 3 o rings that look about right..
OR
somebody here Knows the size ..
my suzi shop and i have lost 3 or 4 in the last 4 years....

oil can sometimes run up that cable when the seal gets lost at the bottom of the cable where it screws into the case.  you can't just buy a replacement though.  but you can just use a suitable sized o-ring.

Now, I'm assuming you've had the tank off and know that's where it's leaking.

one more thing since you just got it.  if you overfill the oil, it's more likely to do this.  if you don't have a owners manual which will tell you how to properly check the oil level, download it from the tech doc's.

Copied from another post:

Can't recall if this fix has been posted yet.

If you get an oil leak here,:

toss the POS OEM oil seal and get you a small o-ring.  Buna-N, Neoprene, or Viton is best.  Unscrew the cable end from the engine case.  Note that the diameter of the shaft section the o-ring goes on is about 0.275".  Put the o-ring here:

Smear a small bit of silicone grease on the o-ring and reinstall the speedo cable end to the engine case.  Don't overtighten.

End of problem......for a while.  The o-ring will not stand up to multiple R&Rs of the speedo cable.  But, if you leave the cable alone, it will last for quite some time.

I lost my OEM part. Didnt have the right size O-Ring, so, I cut one down. If you do that, remember to cut at an angle. Works fine, no leakeee..

So I went ahead and found an O-ring that fit. I put it on as tightly as possible. No more oil.

Much appreciated guys.
