tire size and speedometer readings
08/11/10 at 22:32:07

OK, so whats the deal with rear tire size and the speedo on these bikes I remember reading that the speedo was optimistic and that a tall rear like 140-90 would fix it, now after Babyhog bought one some of you say this will give a lower than true reading. My factory IRCs have 4500 miles on them and are in good shape  but sometime next year I expect I will need a new rear, but don,t want to screw up my speedometer. What gives, Babyhog, is  your speedo now off.

depends on the calibration of the speedo.  most speedos will read alittle fast.  No dealer wants a customer to come back and sue for a speeding ticket cause the speedo was slow.  So most here can put on a slightly larger 140/90 and have the speedo read dead on.  some will go as far as to doubt what speed someones states they've gone.  And then there's the chain mod group who are 10% above the indicated speed.   Cool

I found recently that a 140/90 runs 6 mph faster then the stock irc did.
My irc(140/80) was pretty much dead nuts on per my gps.
Put a 140/90 rear on and now the speedo reads 6mph slower then your going per the gps.
I got to keep that in mind when running through town.
You push 5mph faster then the speed limit(which they usualy ignore) and now im 11 mph over the speed limit. Which they wont ignore...lol

So far, I'm right on with Wolfman, but my only gage of this is hubby riding behind me, comparing to his speedo.  With my stock tire, I always seemed to be a little fast (speedo reading lower than actual), now it seems further off.  I was cruising about 55, he said I was going 61.  Down around 30ish, its only a couple mph off.  I don't have a GPS and haven't been on the highway to do a mile-marker test yet, so I've just been extra careful....

Oh, we tried going through a "work zone" that had one of those electronic "your speed is...." things, but it didn't pick up the bike.  I guess not enough surface area to see us.

Stock IRC was off, 140/90 pirelli seems to be more accurate...at least according to my drives by the "your speed is" measurements...

If your speedometer has been calibrated for 140/80 R 15 (24 x 5.51 x 15) tires, replacing them with 140/90 R 15's (24 x 5.51 x 15's) would result in the speedometer reading low by 4.42%.

i.e. you are going 4.42 % faster than indicated at all speeds.

This link is the only tire calculator I found that allows motorcycle sizes.
http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html

Enter 14/80 - 15 in Tire A and 140/90 - 15 in Tire B.
Select "Compare Tire A to Tire B" and click on Submit.

Speedometer error listed from 5 mph to 200 mph in 5 mph increments.

Quote:
Actual Speed      Indicated Speed with Tire B      Speedometer Error
20 mph (32.18 kph)      19.12 mph (30.76 kph)      -0.88 mph (-1.42 kph)
60 mph (96.54 kph)      57.35 mph (92.27 kph)      -2.65 mph (-4.27 kph)
65 mph (104.58 kph)      62.12 mph (99.96 kph)      -2.88 mph (-4.63 kph)
80 mph (128.72 kph)      76.46 mph (123.03 kph)      -3.54 mph (-5.69 kph)

The faster you go, the bigger MPH the difference is.

My 2k Sav. was reading almost 10% slower than "real speed" with the oversize Dunlop. Now with the dark-sider back there it's almost dead on accurate.

16 inch rear wheel with a 130/90 tire and 16/47 chain conversion. I have no idea how accurate my speedo is anymore really. Dont matter much though. With all the mods Ive done Im speeding 90% of the time anyway  Wink . Luckily...so is almost everyone else around here, so I blend in well.

Been out of town and away from my computer for about a week and a half. I kind of seems to me that those of you with older Savages have speedos that read a little high and the newer S40 like mine are close to right on. Does anyone know if Suzuki changed anything in the speedo or gears that run it. I think from what I've read here so far that I'll stick with the 140-80 which limits my options, there are however good tires in that size.
