We could ask,..."for what"

But I'd choose grease over oil, and I mite use STP over grease. STP can PMO just about as bad as neversieze ! Angry Grin

I stirred some stuff together to put in the rear axle of the lawnmower. It leaked & the fixit folks said, its not a serviceable item, replace for $300.00 + labor. So, I took it out, opened it up, added what I call, Groil, a mix of grease, oil, & neversieze. Added a grease gun hose & a vent tube to the axle housing, now, I can top it off w/ grease, but, since I added the vent, it doesnt seem to be pushing grease out on hot days like it did,, meeehhh,, long as it works, who cares, right?

Maybe a mix of oil & grease? Pretty serious slikkum.

I wouldn't use stp, superslick sh!t.
you need an anticorrosive agent
if you can't get antisieze, use oil
grease has wax in it which won't squeeze out easily allowing metal to metal contact.

WD evaporates away, tho. My boss wanted me to "pickle" a big bunch of auto transmission parts for a pulling unit, Massive & expensive stuff. He handed me a few cans of WD & went wild spraying those things down. Everything was drenched & dripping in WD40. I happened to need up where the parts were a couple months later & they were all junk. Rusted up & looking like crap, total loss. This was in West Tx, not exactly the most humid place Ive been.

darn, that is weird - WD40=Water-Displacement formula attempt#40 , made for rust prevention, not lube.

Vaseline/petroleum jelly is cheap and it was also developed for rust prevention.

Faced with that choice, I'd use the grease.

JMHO.
