you can do this with the carb still on the bike, shouldn't be too hard, just watch you don't spill gas everywhere (assuming the float bowl has fuel in it).
If you have any problems taking the bowl off, and if you are doing the work somewhere quiet - I've found you can hear the fuel trickling into the carb bowl and stopping when the floats rise. Drain it first with the drain screw on the bottom of the carb-bowl (with the petcock turned off) then turn the petcock to prime and you should hear the fuel trickle in for 10 seconds or so.
If that's ok then it's probably a clogged jet, so Seafoam first, then strip and clean if still no good.
