very important top end question..

is the 86 LS650 CYLINDER & PISTON interchangeable with the 05 cylinder and piston?
and if it is, does the valves and everything else fit well?

'86 is the 1st year of the model, a few things changed the next year.
I think the cyl and piston will fit. Someone did say there was a difference in cylinder height somewhere but can't find it. I believe there's enough clearance not to create an issue with the valves. There would only be a problem with timing if there was a large change in height. Something like 1° for every .01"

hmm.. i blew the top end so i need to replace the top end, i was planing on buying a new cylinder and piston and rebuild the valves and other components.
would you recommend going with a newer year full top end? or use the 86 bottom end - 05 cylinder head and piston and 86 valve train?

Please note that tech section is for how-to's and technical info.
All bike questions should be posted in rubber side down.
BS in the cafe.
How did the top end blow out?

oh im sorry.. im new to the forum.
I was riding on the FW and the engine just shut off. no smoke no nothing..
took it home and started inspecting. I thought it was the CDI at first but not, then carbs, and they were fine, untill i took the spark plug out and it was broken. i put a flash light to the top end and saw that it had a crack.
i am guessing the timing chain went out and from there everything went bad, or that the spark plug was a little longer than the stock one.

I was afraid this was the story.
Most likely you'll need a piston and head, keep an eye on fleabay.
I don't have a top end for you, but I do have a used piston and head that was parted out w/o the cover. been left out in the rain and rusted.

The PO told me he dropped a washer in the cylinder and started or tried to. Little bit of dings on the combustion chamber, not bad.
Piston is ok, no rust, just a few dings to match.
Trade you a case of beer for them.
You'll have to look at OF's cam reburbish post to make the head cover match and use what you can out of your existing engine.
I would recomend new chain and guides if it was the cam chain that let go.
