knocking in the top of engine - is it serious?
06/16/10 at 11:36:16

Hello,
there is a knocking in the top of the engine, sounds like metal to metal tapping, it doesn't matter if the engine is cold or hot, maybe it sounds louder when it is hot. It sounds like valves taping somewhere, but I've just adjusted them(made the gap 0.1mm).
I have no loose of power as it was before.
Is it serious problem? What I must look for?

My motocycle  - Suzuki Savage Ls650 made 1986.

valve clearance...
gap should be 0.008 to 0.013mm, .003 - .005in...

EDIT!... These numbers are incorrect!... Taken from Clymers manual.  They are wrong in the manual!
Sorry...

the knocking is most likely the valves. I seem to remember a washer or two that loosens up and shuffles around a bit. it is hard to notice, but the knocking should get quieter as you roll on the throttle as the valves open up and take away the clearance of the washer.

if you've got the time, open her back up again and double check the clearances. if they're spot on the .1mm, then just get used to the knocking, it is normal and fine. else if they've opened up larger, something didn't get tightened down enough and you've got to do 'er over again...

according to google, .005 inches is .127mm...

probably just missed a decimal place somewhere....

Some feeler gauge sets have both the metric size and the sae size printed on them.  I like the ones that have both.
the manual may have given a metric measure and labeled  as sae.
This can give a huge difference in clearance.

Hi, could pay to check the decompression setting, mine had a knock after i first put it back together and it was the cam follower hitting the decomp lever, you could feel it by touching the lever.

check that you're setting them at the correct TDC.
Should be at TDC of the compression stroke.

I concur.  I have some experience with setting them at the wrong TDC.   Roll Eyes
And they do make extra noise.

Sorry... My screw up... the Clymers manual has the metric conversion wrong...
These are correct...

0.003" to 0.005" inches...

0.076mm to 0.127mm...

Shoot for the middle.... 0.004"inches or 0.1mm... same on all four valves...

Thank's for the coments. Now I see that this knocking is more on the left side of the top of the engine, and I also see that sound gets louder when I open the throttle. Maybe you can tell something more now?

Till you check/adjust the valves, youre probably not gonna know what it is. Id eliminate that spot on the t-shootin list.
