randomly rich? no start....start, no idle...
06/14/10 at 17:26:11

ok. i rode my bike 15 minutes to work this morning and then an hour later i rode it for another 10 minutes and filled it up with a full tank. i rode for another few minutes and then let it sit till lunch. at lunch i rode it for about 30 minutes and then parked it till i got off work. all this time it was running great as usual.
When i got off work it wouldnt start. it turned over but wouldnt start. switched to prime and then to reserve trying to start. smelled like it flooded. eventually it finally started after holding the throttle wide open for a bit. black smoke out the exhaust. it would not idle and died quickly. i restarted but it wouldnt hold an idle. eventually it wouldnt start again.
I usually run pretty lean and have my screw out pretty far to compensate. i have been riding like this since i put my dyna on a few months ago with no issues no black soot nothing. i even have the slight increase in speed when backing off wide open in 5th. i turned the screw in adjusted the idle speed but nothing external has worked yet.
Where do i start to remedy this???

Either your float's sticking,... or your petcock is going bad...

Here's an easy test... Wink...

ok i should have figured this out sooner but when i remove the fuel line from the carb with the petcock in what should be off,  fuel still flows. so i guess i need a new petcock? but not due to vacuum issues?

Hows your oil level? If its looking over full,, it may have gas in it.

so i decided on the petcock and i have been draining the tank to remove it. i discovered that with barely any fuel in the tank, the petcock would switch off. so i switched it off, drained the float bowl and got the bike started. it idled just like it should so i shut it off and put a gallon of gas back in the tank to test the petcock again. with that much gas in it, it would not shut off so i am figuring that whatever diaphragm is in there is failing under the weight and pressure of a full tank or even partially filled tank of gas. i wonder what made this come about so abruptly?...... this bike is an 02 with only 3000, 2000 of which i put on in the last few months......any suggestions??

If you're in the market for a stock petcock I've got one. Worked well last I used it but it has been sitting in my garage for a year. I switched to a yamaha raptor 660 petcock to avoid issues like the one you're having. Plus it's cheaper than a stock replacement if you insist on buying new. If you're interested in my used one PM me. $15 + shipping from me to you. Of course on the off chance that it doesnt work now you'll get your money back.

Wait a minute,...  is "what should be off",.. Prime?...
Gas will flow freely on prime... that's normal...

Otherwise,.. yes,... you need a new petcock.  Don't fu@k around, just buy a Raptor...

+1 on the Raptor. Did the conversion about a year ago and never looked back. No problems to date. Just have to remember to turn the valve off, and I attached a lanyard to the petcock and my keychain so that when I remove the keys, I'm right there at the petcock. Instant reminder.

installed my raptor a couple weeks ago...no regrets. The install was super duper easy....15 minutes going really pokey...
Bought mine from Ron Ayers...23 buck w/ shipping and had it in 3 days

Direct bolt up,... just make sure and block off the vacuum tap on the carb because it will no longer be used...  I put a tight fitting screw in it...
If you don't do that,... it will cause a severe air leak and make you super lean...

As a side benefit,.. the Raptor makes tank removal really easy... Wink...

Get a price from Ron Ayers online, and take it to your local shop and see if they will match that price... Might save you shipping costs...
They did it here in Tucson...
See the link I posted earlier for specific link to the correct petcock...
