cutting out in heavy rain
06/07/10 at 10:56:38
hello all,
i took a ride today in some heavy rain and got a intermittent cutting out problem. i was just riding along then it suddenly misfired popped banged and then stalled. Pushed to the side of the road and then it wouldn't start unless i left it for about 15 mins. It just turned over and started popping?
it cut out whenever i was traveling uphill in the rain. to get home i just left it on the road side till it stopped raining and dried up and then behaved as normal.
should i try and find the source of this or just attack all the connections with tape?

Your bike is a wus and doesn';t want to ride in the rain.

what kind of air intake do you have?
might be that water was getting in that way?

Actually it is most likely the ignition relay (the little black box that goes thunk and tells the solenoid to fire the starter). Really low quality part, water blows right into the connections. Find it and seal it. Or else. I ended up bypassing mine with a secondary pushbutton (with built in 40 amp breaker). I still need my key and kill switch to be in the on position to run the engine, but I can now crank her until the battery croaks without either...
Oh, the relay is kinda pricey, Bike Bandit wants $70+ USD for the stupid thing. And they tack on shipping and fondling...
Hence the $10 button on mine.

hm. i would have figured suzuki would have put it somewhere better than just under the left side panel if it were susceptible to water damage.
right now mine is electrical taped to the side of the battery box that used to hold the tools. now you have me considering moving it/sealing it...

Water will find a way. Mine is on top of the carb so engine heat will keep it dryish. And water can't run uphill.

that sounds fun no tingling but only misfiring and stalling. ive sprayed lots of sealer around all the electrical connections so lets see how it behaves in tomorrow forecasted heavy rain.

Jab,
Just in case you're still having an issue, I've located these types of problems in the past by lightly squirting a fine spray of water on the engine and various components with a spray bottle while the engine is idling.
When the engine stumbles, you've found your problem.
IHTH!
