Clutch won't disengauge????

If you've been keeping up. I replaced my timing chain and tensioner guide and had troubles getting her back into time.

She is now in time and will fire up and run smoothly in neutral.... however when i put her in gear she wants to creep forward. No matter where i adjust the cable to, she will creep forward and i won't be able to kick her from first into neutral.

I had the clutch apart and thought i got her put back together properly (disks/plates aligned properly, springs tightened down, etc.

Any ideas to help would be much appreciated.

Reply #1 - 05/24/10 at 10:30:26 It's hard to tell what's wrong if it's not the clutch lever or the cable.. You made sure the cable is actually actuating the clutch lever right? if you do a search in the tech section I think someone posted the PDF file of the clymer manual that may have some more tips and diagrams.

Did you oil the clutch plates when you put them back in? You have to do this or the clutch won't properly disengage.

If this is the case, run it for a few days and the oil will migrate naturally back inside the plates and your draggy action will correct itself.

Wet clutches operate by oil sticktion, not by rubbing cork to steel. Changes in oil viscosity (or lack of oil) can cause "different" behavior in a wet clutch.

Lastly, if you have no manual how do know that you put it back together properly?

No i didn't put oil on them. the bike has been sitting for about 1.5 months w/o oil in it so that is a VERY GOOD possibility oldfeller.

Honestly, I don't know i put it back together properly, but i have a knack for remembering how i took something apart. mostly you put it backtogether in reverse. (i fix cars for a living.... I've got alot of practice figuring out how stuff comes apart and goes back together).

I'll run it for an hour or so this afternoon and see if that helps.

Reply #4 - 05/24/10 at 11:34:23 Are getting good lever action? does it require a good force to pull the clutch? If so, I'd go with OF's advice. Maybe even tip the bike over to get more oil over there. Get a jack stand and put it under the upper shock mount and tip it about 45° If no, then either the clutch cam has broken or you forgot to put in the rod.

Reply #5 - 05/24/10 at 11:48:39 would gently "laying" the bike down on the clutch side speed up this process. kinda trying to "dip" the clutch in oil? or would it not get the oil where it needs to be? i guess you anwered my question above...

Are you guys sure about this?? I mean, the whole pack is dipped in oil, right? That thing will creep in there in 1 second... Let alone when you engage and plates split apart. Dunno...
Pip, I've never done it - but I would easily take it apart one more time, my friend, specially if you know it worked all right before. My 5 cents.

In theory that is correct.

I adjusted the clutch cable to take the clutch cover off. when i took the clutch off to replace the timing chain the clutch kinda "fell apart" 1 or 2 things come out of place..... but all the clutch plates got turned. i put them back together as best as i thought and now she desn't move right. no matter how I adjust the clutch cable.

I'm starting to wonder if i got something in the wrong place or somethin similar to that. i've been examining the pic you hyperlinked to on a local bike shop's website and thinking that i've gotta pop the clutch apart and see what i did.

Is there a walkthru about clutch assembly/disassembly on this site? I have looked but havn't found one.

Reply #12 - 05/25/10 at 09:08:53 So there are 2 "washers" at the front of the clutch pack and i don't know which one goes where, i'm wondering if this isn't my issue. everything else looks good..... but one of these is "torqued" and doesn't lay flat and the other 1 IS flat.
