Noisey camchain
04/27/10 at 18:32:41

The past week have been hearing a noise from right side of the head.  Have concluded it is the camchain or camchain tensioner.  Bike has 10k miles, local driving with no interstate.  Bike starts OK but does run ragged at times.  Will not ride until fixed, but would like some thoughts on what pit falls I might run into doing a fix replacing the cam tensioner.  This will be a first wrenching for me.  I have the Clymer AND factory manual, plus reading the tech posting, so hopefully will be able to replace using only common cuss words.......Thanks

I wouldnt hedge my bets on making it from MS to CA though. I replaced my chain with no issues. I opted to remove the engine from the frame and replace the guides aswell but that isnt required. Biggest thing is to make sure your at TDCC when you start. Diassemble, replace, reassemble. When you reassemble make sure the piston is still at TDC and the cam timing marks are aligned with the head with the lobes pointed downward. Other than that move slowly and surely, check your manuals frequently while proceeding (read the whole procedure several times through before starting) and if you have questions, just ask.

When I did my first oil change I thought I became a 'serious thimper'. LOL Smiley  Verslavies idea with the no swimsuits was the best....forget about the tensioner.  Now riding from MS to CA sounds great but after getting my 72 year old butt there I would be in ICU.Smiley  I ride with some other 'old geezers' and have the smallest ride in the bunch.  after we put our brains in tandem this tensioner job should move right along.  Thanks for your advise, comments and support.

Will probably be getting in touch with Verslagen1 about his package deal.

No, but a friend of mine did suggest that.....so will do that first.  Bought the bike new in 05 and it probably needs a good going over.  I hope to post some pixs.

My tensioner was at 18mm at about 10k mi but it seems fairly uncommon. If I were you I'd adjust the valves (or have someone do it for you) and pop the right crankcase cover off and see whats what with the chain/tensioner for sure. Best case is you adjust your valves and all is well. Worst is you spend $100 for a verslavy, do some minor wrenching, and rest assured you're bike isnt going to die on you.

Id do the valves & see if that solved the prob.
Also, a Listening device, crammed against the bone in front of your ear & traced around the cam chain path wouldnt be a bad idea, before & after the valve adjust.

Had a friend who built his own engines for his drag boats take care of the valves(?) and educate me on those.  Ordered new tensioner whether needed or not and now ready to put this thing back together.  If a part is left out I will just jump in the river.  Please  pass some assembly ideas on to me, locktie etc., and it will be appreciated.  Can the cam chain be replaced without pulling the engine?

Thanks for you help!!!

the chain can be replaced with engine in, but I'd recommend pulling it.
especially for a 1st timer.  It's a little difficult getting the head cover back on remember the center bolt and w/o wiping all the rtv on the chain.  It seems like a lot more effort but not really.  pull all the bolts to get the engine loose.  Throw a blanket down on the lawn, tip the bike over on it.  Wiggle the engine free.  Then ask your wife to pick it up and put it on the bench.   Grin
