Reply #1 - 04/05/10 at 17:39:56 If you live at near sea level elevation,... most stock bikes, including the Savage, are jetted lean for EPA emissions... Jetting a bit richer, will let it run a little cooler and perform a bit better... possibly less pipe blueing, but slightly reduced MPG's... If you are at 2500ft to 4000ft... the jetting is not too bad stock...

Have some bluing on front of muffler, but not bad. Thought it came from where we didn't quite have the connection sealed well enough. What causes the bluing?

We all have our own ideas on blueing, but I'm convinced that just because the pipe get blue over time doesn't mean that it has to be running too lean.
W/ stock jetting except for spacer mod, my pipe was quite blue when I bought it at 3500 miles, run mostly at sea level, and now here at 800' elev, it shows no signs of running too lean.

However, if I were to run this bike at sea level on hot days and hi sp heavy throttle, I would maybe have to upjet a touch.

Rejetting the carb is the means to getting the propper amount of fuel mixed w/ the incoming air. By getting the ratio correct (stock is far cry from "correct" for most) you will get more power and a better/cooler running engine. The popping/ backfiring is caused (at least in part) by a screwed up air/fuel mix by Suzuki.

In order to meet EPA requirements (emissions) they were forced to either sink money into the bike to add a catalytic converter or other secondary emissions system, which they didn't want to do on a low cost bike like the Savage/S40, or run a less than optimal air fuel mix. They chose the overly lean (too much air, not enough fuel) carb settings because it cost them very little $$$ to do.

With the correct air/fuel mix you will be amazed at how much more torque and HP "Thumper" will make. It really is pretty dramatic.

Hardest thing about rejetting is getting the four screws out, that hold the floatbowl (bottom of carb)...
If you can do that,.. the rest is easy...
If you do, do that,... replace those screws with allen heads... then the future is bliss...

If you are stock jetted,... start with a #150 main (ask for large head #150 Mikuni jet)...
Leave the pilot stock, and try adjusting the idle mix screw,... under brass plug on rightside of carb... see tech section for instruction...
