need help with rear turn signal connections
03/18/10 at 17:23:46

I am replacing the stock “rear” turn signals on my 2004.
The stock lamps have a one filament bulb, and twin leads; while my replacements have a twin filament bulb in a twin twin lead lamp.

The Clymers wiring diagram for the 2004 shows one lead on the stock turn signals going to the flasher switch, and the other going to the hazard light switch. This is a plastic lamp with no apparent ground circuit or return.
The replacements are metal and ground back through the fender/frame connection. The two leads appear to be a flasher lead and a tail light or brake light lead.

The question therefore, is how do I wire the new lamps so that one filament is energized as a flasher “and” hazard light, while the other is on when the tail light is on?
The stock leads connect through a couple of connector blocks that are zip tied to the frame ears under the seat. Left side leads are black&white and black (black being the flasher lead). The right side leads are black&white and green (green being the flasher lead).
My initial thought is to take the lead going to the brighter filament, and splice it into “two” lines going to the connector block under the seat for that side of the bike. The other lead would be spliced into the power supply to the taillight.
Wiring is not my strong suite, so any help is appreciated.

I don't have a wiring diagram for a flasher model,... but I'm pretty sure one wire will tap the blinker/flasher/hot,... and the other will go to ground...

Ground on the earlier models is black wire w/white tracer...
The other is hot,... solid black for left,  light green for right...

That is the same set up for the 2004, right down to the colors.

On the replacement units either bulb contact completes a circuit when you ground to the light housing/shell, so it will ground back to the frame.
Are you suggesting that I run a ground strap from the lamp back to the black w/white tracer contact (adding a third wire)?

I can't see from here,...

But I'm guessing the blinkers you bought are metal... that metal has to contact ground, either physically or by wire... then hook the brighter of the two bulb contacts to the hot (light green or black) wires...
I wouldn't connect both filaments to the hot,... that will probably create too much heat in the bulb and cause a premature failure...
The dimmer of the two filaments is intended to be a running light, and on all the time, the brighter is for blinking...

Only connect the the brighter one...  Wink

laws in many states only allow red running lights in the rear...

Don't know what color yours are... if they are red, and you want a constant running light, ...tap from the tailight... to the dimmer filament of your blinky bulb...

Thanks for the feedback.
Does the hazard light circuit operate off the same flasher relay but energize both sides at once?

Don't know... I don't have one.
Check your wiring diagram for two flashers...
My bet is it runs off the same one...

Just giving my best guess, 'cause nobody else is picking up... Huh

One way to find out,.. unplug the blinker relay,.. and see if the flashers still work...
