last minute details on fixing the oil leak?
03/15/10 at 22:09:20
I'm doing the head plug replacement/re-torque head bolt/stop oil leak thing this weekend. I've read all the stuff in the tech section but does anyone have any specific tips or hints. This is my first stab at messing with an engine or really anything automotive. I replaced the belt tension thingy on my truck once and broke the tool I rented. I think I'm ready but I love getting all the details before i dive in. Thanks. this forum is AWESOME!!

Just take your time,... and keep track of the bolts...
If you have a digicam,... take pics,... if you don't, draw a map... if you loose track,..put them all in the cover, and they should all hang down about the same amount...
Go get 'em Tiger....

It is really not that bad a job, you just have to be careful and pay attention to what you are doing. Find a diagram of the head and put the bolts there, it makes it easy to get them back in the right place (they are all different lengths). Let me know if you can't find the diagram and I will send you one. If you have any other problems or questions, just holler and someone will help.

Re-size if you have to and print the above image and tape it to a box. As you remove a head cover bolt, place it in its corresponding spot on the diagram.

Tape the diagram to a small box & use a screwdriver to poke holes where the bolts go. Then just push the bolts thru the diagram in their proper place as you remove them. Almost foolproof unless you somehow manage to knock the box off your work bench, even then they won'tall fall out. Guess how I found that out.
