Having issues after a long winter
03/09/10 at 07:34:51

Well winter is finally over and i want to go ride again!
Over the winter I bought at cone air filter and re jetted the carb with lancers jets.
Now I can get the bike started and running but it will not idle long and when i try to ride it the low end is very sputtery. also when i rev the engine real hard it will back fire and throw flames from the exhaust? any ideas on how to get back to running smoothly again would be great.

Put it back to stock and see if it runs as it should. Then make ONE modification at a time and note the results. That way you might be able to figure out the best setup. Changing more than one thing at a time is usually a road to trouble.

Since you say there is rust in the gas tank, put an in-line fuel filter between the petcock and the carburetor.

Charon's got your problem, if you have a rusty tank you just put some rust flakes into your jets & passages -- go get you an in line gas filter and clean out the jets & passages in your carb and see if your issues don't disappear.

Always always have a fuel filter installed on your Savage -- the bikes were not designed to use alcohol fuel mixes and they have ZERO rust preventative plastic layers in the gas tank, etc.

Alcohol is in most regular gas nowadays -- it causes corrosion in unlined steel gas tanks.

Ouch !
Rust in tank
minus no fuel filter = clean carb !

BTW, wheres the fuel filter ? Mine don't have one either ?

Seems like I seen one on the petcock,....but if I remember right, it
wouldn't do much more than keep butterflies out.
I think I'll put a finer one inline.
