Proper warm-up methodology?
12/04/09 at 22:45:37

So I recently had some issues with my spark plug being "fouled", and I think I might have done it letting it warm up too long with the choke out.

What is the most recommended method for starting a cold Savage? I've been pulling the choke, starting it, and letting it warm up for 2-3 minutes. Then I push the choke in a little more to idle faster and then push it all the way.

I think my method is wrong, and I'd like to hear the proper method, including how to know when the bike is sufficiently warm, and how long I should let it idle.

I don't know about being "proper," but I usually
pull the choke all the way, get it started,
after 10-15 seconds put it on 1/2 choke,
finish putting on my helmet & gloves then ride off for the first block or two,
then I reach down and push it in the rest of the way.

Seems to work for me...  Grin

If I want to keep the loud MAC muffler I'm not allowed to sit outside the house idling at 6:40 am.  Fortunately, here in So.Cal., I rarely need to pull out the enricher knob.  (it adds fuel, it doesn't choke off the air supply)  For over half of the mornings in the past five years I have simply fired up and gently rode off within a second or two.

I usually don't use the choke/enricher, I usually fire it up and turn the idle screw up a bit until I have a smooth idle and let it warm up. When the rpms start getting faster I then turn the idle screw back down and then take off.

I usually give it 1/2 choke, unless it's real cold, then go all the way (like I expect it to be this afternoon, probably won't get above freezing Tongue).  When it warms up a little the idle sounds rougher, so I go in a notch, until it's warm enough to idle with no choke.  I'll bump up the idle a little if it sounds too low, and back it down again later, since it's easy to get to.  And go easy on it until I'm sure it's warmed up fully.

i usually go half choke, ride for a little then push it in. no more then a couple of minutes.

i used to adjust my idle screw, but it would loosen so i'd stall alot. i put some threadlock and now i idle a little fast when warm. i heard that was no biggie though.

she'll tell u when she's warm, listen and she will talk lol

shhh hear that????? lol me neither

probily depends on configuration and location.

i start mine let her site for a minute or two and im off.

When im fully "enriched" she dies likes its way to rich, even half choke makes it stumble a little bit.. maybe my supertrapp needs some adjusting... from central florida area

I think it is generally good practice to use as little choke for as short of a time as the bike can stand and still start/run.

If you think it is idling too low after you shut off the choke, just blip the throttle a bit every now and again to get some fresh oil into the top end.  Either that or just hold the throttle open a bit to increase the idle speed.

JMHO.

I usually pull the choke all the way to get it going then just turn the throttle screw up until it gets warm enough to drive.

The issue is not only "starting" but also "fouling the plug".

There are only 3 sure ways of avoinding to fould the plug, that I know of :

1) a 3 - 4 electrode plug (but, do they make one in the Savage's size and temperature grading ?)

2) EFI (whoch means ripping the basics out of the savage)

3) Ballast load resistor on the ciol (essentially, using a 6V coil with a ballast load resistor which will be "bridged' during startup, it will double the voltage load on the coil but only for a few seconds, awsome spark as long as the engine is cranking)

The 1st system is my preferred method, but I can't find a 3-4 electrode plug in our size.

I ususally pull the choke all the way out while I put on  my helmet, then put it half way when  start riding,,if it runs ok, usually all the way i n by the time i leave town@2-5 minutes.
