Turbo oil feed and ignition advance
11/10/09 at 18:29:20
Hi guys, Ive got some questions.
Im about to turbocharge my 01 Savage. Motor is pretty stock now with a ported head, Mikuni 40mm flat slide pumper carb, and full 1.75 exhaust.
My question #1 is about an oil feed to the turbo. There is a bung near the oil filter that seems to lead to a gallery. Anyone ever run an oil cooler from it? Any suggestions where to supply oil pressure to the turbo?
2nd question is ignition related. I need a way to retard ignition when Im in boost.
Thanks everyone. Bike is also getting sportbike wheels and suspension
Here are some pics.

I thought about getting a hd ignition, one that has all the bells and whistles. But that is about as much as anyone has done except for slotting the mounting holes for a few degrees advance.

Thank you. That helps alot.
For the ignition if anything Ill slot it to retard it slightly. Ill look at the HD unit as a last resource.

I like the tucked-in high pipe with the turned up megaphone.
Did you find a header that worked on this or did you build it from scratch yourself ?
The mod on the swing arm to convert to single inside shock is very cool too.
Very nice work dude !
A couple of photos showing oil flow inside engine ... did you have this already ? If not, is this helpful ?

Yep that illustration is helpful. Ill probably use that to hook up an oil cooler.
Looks like the oil pump doesnt put out enough pressure to run a turbo, so ill have to use an aux. pump.
I built the exhaust from scratch, muffler and all. The exhaust port is a horrible design so I ported it to flow better and port matched it to the exhaust. Bike is much much quicker than stock.

Nice set-upof the rear suspension, very complicated to change a broken belt though!
Ignition: 5* BTDC below 2000 RPM and 30* BTDC above 4000 RPM
(* used for degrees)
My NON electronic brain let me to understand that the pick-up is fixed at 30* BTDC and the electronics of the CDI retard the ignition. If someone can obtain the schematic of the CDI some parts inside e.g. resistor, pulscounter ect. can be changed in value or made adjustable to influence the ignition timing.
Just a thought

Low Oil pressure, yes..... it would be a great idea to have an aux oil pump. That way you wouldn't interfere with the oil going to the head.
I remember there was a picture of a turbo charged LS650..... and I found it in the gallery.
