Starting problem like I have no gas
10/31/09 at 17:18:18

I took my tank off the other day to do the sparkplug mod.  I put it all back together and thought nothing of it until today I went to start it.  It started right up and I went inside to let it warm up.  I then heard it about to stall out and went to rev the engine when it died.  It wouldn't crank after that.  Just starter, starter, starter.  To me it seemed like it was getting no gas.  I pulled the fuel line from the carb and flipped the petcock to prime.  Fuel ran out.  I can also physically see fuel in my fuel filter.  I thought maybe the fuel system needs priming but couldn't find any posts on here about that so I guess that's not a problem.  Yes the gas tank has gas in it.   Wink
Only thing I did while the tank was off was snip the ends off the vacuum hose.  They had splits in them.

Anything right off your head I should do to get up and running?

Crack the nut at the bottom of the bowl on the carb. prove thers fuel in it. May be a plugged jet?

Replace the vac line, even though you snip the ends, cracks are bound to be all though the line.

Clean the carb.  something got sucked off the bottom of the bowl into the jets.

Agree,  easy things first.  Open the fuel bowel drain and see if how much gas comes out.  I use to use a tuna-fish can to drain mine and never filled it with a full fuel bowel.  Only about 1/4 to 1/2 of the can.

Gremlins, had me a set of gremlins!   Shocked  I got home ready to try some things out.  It had been sitting since yesterday with the petcock in prime.  I notice visually that my fuel filter has more gas in it but figure it's nothing as I've run the bike with less fuel in the fuel filter fine.
Open the fuel bowl drain on the carb and gas runs freely.  Does that mean fuel is passing thru the carb, jets and all?  She starts on the second try.  I took it for a quick spin and everything seemed normal.

I can only guess that whatever was stuck in there dissolved?  Or even having the bike on prime for so long forced it thru?

I am relieved that things seem fine now but at the same time kinda bummed that I'm not forced to take the carb off and clean it.  Grin  I've never done that.
I will be replacing that half dry rotted vacuum tube for sure.

Thank you for your help as always.   Smiley

Have a close look at the oil. You left it on prime? If the needle valve isnt perfectly shutting gas off, you may have flooded the crankcase with gas. Just a tablespoon is too much.

Fuel Filter  Huh .....   by chance did it have any air bubbles in it when the bike was acting up?

it did indeed, but it has for the last 800 miles since I installed it.  Sometimes it has more or less than others.  From talking to my buddy at work his does the same thing.  That concerned me too at first.

Well,  I was thinking that maybe the air stopped the flow like vapor lock, but if you raan 800 miles then maybe not.

How many did you put on it after you got it running?

Only about 5 miles, and now I'm thinking I might not want to run it further until I get the oil changed.  I don't want to go boom!   Tongue  I'll get it changed tomorrow for sure.

Many unnecessarily get concerned when seeing a transparent fuel filter not staying completely full, which in most cases can be completely normal.

BTW, where are ya all finding the transparent fuel filter ? I found the one on the petcock inside the tank, but I don't think that one counts Undecided
