Some photos of sidecar mounts on S-40

Note in the last photo, the fitting on the fork tube and the VW steering damper.

Very helpful. Thank you. Its hard to see the lower rear connection though. All I can really tell is its super close to the muffler. How is that mounted?

Sorry about the lighting. Lower rear - I removed the unit that supports the exhaust and welded a diagonal gusset from the top left to the bottom right. Then welded a receiving lug to the rear bottom of the round support arm.
A heavy heim joint is screwed into it.  Put it back on the bike, voila!
The front tire is an Avon sidecar special, good for about 20,000 miles or so.
Rear tire is a 135 X80 X 15 Michlin for a VW beetle, good for about 25,000 miles

Where are you finding those 135-15 tires? The only ones I can find are Nankang brand. Every where else I check a 145 or 155 is the smallest size they show. Does the 135 have any clearance issues when used with a stock fender? My trailer hitch won't allow me to use a larger size unless I redesign the rear mounts to go outside the fender.

I really like your sidecar rig but I wouldn't be able to cut the ferry line with one, it's to wide.

Michlin or however that is spelled, Built the tire,  I have mounted 4 of them now on different wheels.  I heard that they may have discontinued it.  No clearance problems anywhere.

Do you have an extra one? They don't list it on their website. I really don't want a Nankang but it may be the only one available any more. Sad

IIRC the michelin phelonius is running on the rear is a darkside(car) tire. There are other available options if the michelin has been discontinued. The avon's are sidecar specific on his front and hack wheels. Search "darkside".

I know it's a car tire - & the darckside website is in my favorites. The problem is the only one I can find is the Nankang!!

P, have you ridden your bike with the Avon on the front w/o the sidecar?

NO! And I do not recommend it to anyone to use that tire on a two wheeler.

BTW in 35 thousand miles, that particular machine has not been used as a two wheeler except to fly the chair.  The modifications I have done have made it sidecar specific. and it does that job very well.

sorry ridge. With your 33 posts i assumed you were a newb. My mistake. I find it kind of surprising you cant find another tire though. Good luck on the search.

No problem, Burn. New to site, not to Savages. I've owned three, starting back in 1988. Just lately decided I'd like to try the "Darkside". Kind of fits my style. Cool
