The conventional way to install one is to just punch a hole in the rubber boot behind the carb, which I assume you don't have because of the cone setup.
In that case it will be slightly more trouble, but you will end up with a better install. I have the stock airbox w/upstream boot, but still put the DAJ straight into the carb body. The DAJ is said to function better the closer the emulsion tube is to the slide. So all you have to do is VERY CAREFULLY drill a hole just upstream of the slide such that the emulsion tube will be perpendicular to the airflow and point right at the center of the carb throat. Also be careful to place the hole so that you have clearance for the DAJ box and snorkel boot if you choose to run it.
Select a bit size the same or slightly smaller than the outer thread diameter at the top of the emulsion tube. Since the tube's brass is harder than the aluminum, it will thread right in. Thread it in there and put a dab of red RTV or other sealant so it squeezes down as you finish screwing it down. It should be very snug, and you may not even need the zip-tie to hold it down.

I install the DAJ into the carb body as B/T described doing to his.
I drill and tap the threads for quick and easy mounting.

Do not go upside down. The best positions are between 1 & 2 o'clock, or between 10 & 11 o'clock. You can go down to 3 or 9 o'clock but only if you have to.

I believe the +/- marks refer to the dial, which would be turned toward the + side for a richer mixture.

Besides the white plastic 5-position dial, there's also a brass screw, with +/i signs are right around it. Baaaaa, nevermind, I'll figure it out.

The brass screw is the "lock-down" device. Loosen it before turning the plastic numbered adjustment dial to lean or richen the mixture, then tighten the brass screw again to lock the adjustment dial in place.
Turning the plastic numbered adjustment dial without loosening the brass screw could possibly damage the plastic dial.
The intructions that come with the DAJ explain the process.

I'm very interested in your impression of the device after you get it install on the savage.
How lean are you going to setup the savage carb so the device can fill it back in?

Thanks again. I will post impressions, for sure.
Reelthing: I run a K&N and a large ID straight-through glasspack pipe. Jets are 50 idle, mix screw 3 turns out, 150 main, needle one recess up (I have a carb with little clip), white washer in place as stock. Surprisingly enough, but I'm just slightly lean, and it got worse after it got colder.
I don't think I will have to do anything to make it even leaner, believing I am just about within the desired 10% "leanness" for DIJ to work.
We will see.

That dial a jet is a waste of time and money, unless every hour as the temperature rises you want to dial in a new setting.
