engine noise

Hi, Guys and Gals!! I'm back with a new conundrum. The 95 savage that the Boss Lady pilots has some top end engine noise. My inciteful Father says it sounds like the valves need adjusting. I first thought it may be the doughnut gasket , so I got a couple and  replaced it (extra for a spare). It still has a chatter and back fires a good bit
I guees maybees the old-fart was right. It has a backfire that mixture adjustment has not quelmed either.
Any ideas or is this normal?  Huh
