When did Savage come out with 5 speed?
09/28/09 at 10:40:22
I'm a newbie, looking for a Savage for my wife to ride (maybe me too?) and wonder if there is a model year guide showing changes from year to year?
What I really want now, is to know when the 4 speed models ended, and the 5 speed began?
Thanks,
Allred

Also there is little difference between 4th and 5th gear - seems like #5 was just a sales bulletin marketing point, I can't even tell when I'm in 5th from the sound change.
Other than the seat losing the sissy bar in 2005? there is little changed for years. Flash-to-pass in 2004...

The 1st US 5speed is '95
Is that when they started the smaller main jets?

If I remember right, isn't 5th gear still just a 1:1 ratio, same as the old 4th, and not an overdrive? That would just mean closer ratios on the other gears if that's true. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The factory type service manual lists the ratio's as..
4th .956 to 1 (22/23)
5th .884 to 1 (23/26)
Over drives are common on motorcycles because of multiple shafts.
Not like a car where things rely on the main shaft.
But then it doesn't mean much as far as ratio's go because the bike
uses a primary reduction (crankshaft to tranny) of 1.810 to 1 (67/37)

yes, gear ratio is close but not the same.
On last year's PA ride (Sept 20th) (

), PhotoJoe was in front of me on his 4 spd with a super-trapp and me on my 5 spd with a HD Screaming eagle. The slight difference make an exhaust noise oscillation that started to give me a headache. Wa... wa... wa..

According to my notes:
With the 2005 came a different seat setup, drag bars replacing the buckhorns, auto shutoff of the headlight during starting, left side switch that flicks the high beam off and on, the 5 speed had different gearing for faster acceleration but lower top end & the counter balance was improved to reduce vibration.

T Mack, yeah I can imagine..LOL like a squadron (sp?) of bombers flyin
up the coast...
Guess I wasn't thinkin when I did that post, was just comparing 4th to
5th on the 5 speed model.
4th on the 4 speed is .875 to 1 (21/24), but then again they are using a different primary ratio 1.888 to 1 (68/36)
Too much math for me this morning, gettin a headache, Think I will go
out to the shop and watch some paint dry LOL
tnx, Keith

That's likely what guitarists/musicians call "beat notes". When the frequencies of two tones are close, but not identical, the waves create that noticeable repeating pattern at the frequency of the difference between the two tones (i.e., if it's a 440 A, and a 444 A, then the beat note vibrates at 4 hz).
It'd have been interesting to have noted the frequency to figure out the rpm difference between the bikes
