I just purchased a 1987 savage a couple of days ago for a good price. I’m currently in the process of rebuilding due to the previous owner dropping a valve. In the mean time while I wait for the parts to come in I was seeing if I could gain a little more knowledge being a new user and all. I just wanted to know what were some easy or “key” upgrades that I would need? I’ve heard “the white spacer mod” used often but wasn’t really sure how to perform mod. Maybe just a list of what some of you have done and how you feel on the increase in performance. Thanks for your time.

werro, Glad you're here. The Savage is a great little bike that can do big things. Torque is awesome, and stoplight racing will surprise some of the bigger bikes. It will cruise at 65 all day, then race up to 75+ really quick to get out from between squeezing traffic situations. Handling depends on what you can stand and tire condition. It's a 2 lane carver, for sure. Downshifting is usually optional. I cannot believe the variations of this bike done by owners. And most of them look good.   Boofer

any that you like and can recommend?  I was thinking about a fork brace just the other day.  I have one on my mountain bike and that brakes from a much lower speed!  

Options are T-Kat & Superbrace. T-kats design is bulky, blocky Macho, looks good in a rugged sort of way, like, its all business.
Superbrace is slim trim & streamlined & slips deep into the pocketbook,

A bobber looks great with a Tkat, Someone trying to smoothly dress on out might prefer the Superbrace, But, generally, I think the Tkat brace "Fits" an any of them, It is a matter of Owners Desires & if you want to drop about another 100.00 for a slicker look, go for it.

Exhaust: Might as well get this outta the way.

I know I see the Dyna as the best looking, easy to get muffler for this bike, I am sure others do too. So, you can get a better sound out of it, increase the power Some, just by swapping mufflers.
Or there are others you could get, louder, ones, or go for a Supertrapp & that one will Tune for performance. Baffles to add & remove. Jet the carb, get the exhaust freed up, let that engine make the HP it can. All in good time..

yeah this is what I'm working with now. i posted an ad on craigslist and think i have found a dyna take off for 20 bucks. i was looking on line for a K&N right now and will probably rejet. i got in contact with the tkat guy and gave him some measurements. the 1980's savages  are the same size fork measurements as the new s40 right? it sounded like the guy wasn't  to sure. sorry the picture is so bad. i will try to keep up on my progress. I think i already no what you mean Yonuh. mine inst even running right now and i just cant wait to start building.
