Removing the gas-fuel tank (Read 63 times)

Posts: 2280 Winston Oregon Gender:	Removing the gas-fuel tank 09/18/09 at 17:20:17 As usual I searched on the above, and.........nothing usuable ! So I'll post (ask) it here being as it can't be that difficult. I removed the rear bolts (after removing the seat) I removed the 2 hoses from the petcock. I then try to move the tank rearward while raising the rear, but I feel resistence. What am I missing ? Thanks.

Ok, to disect your post, mite it say,......
as you straddle the bike, lift up from the rear, and to the left side to undo the speedo cable ?
So the cable is attached to the tank somehow I take it.

And I'll watch for the washer, but not sure where it would go into the right case ??

The speedometer cable is to be disconnected from the transmission, and will come off with the tank. Caution - there is a rubber washer which may fall out of the cable or which may remain on the transmission and get lost. Lift the rear of the tank and wiggle it to the left to allow the petcock to clear the frame. Once clear the tank will lift up a few inches at the back. Then slide it aft an inch or two, which will free it from the front mounts. Then disconnect the wiring plug under the front of the tank, and lift the tank clear. On some machines the petcock will not clear the frame. If that happens you will have to drain the tank by putting the petcock in PRIme, having first figured out a way to capture the fuel. Then remove the petcock from the tank, and remove the tank.

Eschew obfuscation.

If the rubber cushions on the frame are in good condition you WILL feel resistance when sliding the tank back. They are compressed slightly by the "C" lugs in the underside of the tank. My problem is knocking them off when I slide the tank back on. Silicone caulk will hold them in place on the frame dowels without harming them. Also 3M weatherstrip glue will keep them in place.

Thanks Boofer for the tips.
I ended up taking the petcock off the tank, then no problem.

I did the spacer mod, thinned it to .055, it was .110,....I'll try that 1st.
The screws were super tight, but a tap w/ my impact driver...no problem.
But getting those 2 little screws back in,......was a pregnant dog at best ! Had to use some super sticky grease to stick the screws to the driver, then pc a cake Wink

I'll check the sp plug, then back together,...see if it runs a touch better.
