Changing the viscosity of the fork oil changes the damping characteristics.
Standard ATF is about 15 wt. It doesn't matter which variety...Dexron-III, Mercon-V, etc., and the brand doesn't matter. The newest low viscosity ATFs like Dexron-VI are about 10 wt.
Fork oil must have a very high viscosity index...thickens less when cold and thins less when hot. You don't want a damping change from first thing on a cold morning to hard riding on a hot afternoon. Synthetic oil has a higher VI than conventional oil.
