New Tank, accelleration lagging now
09/14/09 at 11:53:36
put a new sportster style peanut tank on my savage.
i had to get a new petkokkk.
new petkokk didnt have vacuum line as it is gravity feed, so i had to plug vacuum line from carb.
now when i ride the bike it sort of laggs when i accellerate.
it's a rideable bike but just not as smooth as it was
i'm thinking a few things please help.
1. new tank is gravity feed, but maybe petkokk is not hi-flow and i'm not getting enough gass
2. somethign to do with vacuum line being plugged on carb
3. .... i dotn know...??

sounds like your slide is sticking.
add an once of seafoam to the tank and go for a ride.

You say accel is lagging.
What does that mean?
I experienced lagging accel when I can twist the grip and a few seconds latter or more accel suddenly kicks in.
not stumbling, just out and out, wait you want what, oh WOT, I know that.

Your twisting the grip just opens a butterfly valve in the carb. The increase in vacuum moves the slide, if the slide isn't sticky (or oily).
Telling you to put some seafoam in it was a reasonable suggestion, so you might either do that or spray some carb cleaner down on the slide and move it up and down to verify VERY you have very free motion.
Changing tanks means you may have gotten some contaminants from the new tank crudding up your slide.
Let me guess -- you don't run a fuel filter ???

what i WAS feeling was smooth acceleration. i would twist the grip and i would get "somewhat" thrown back in the seat
now, i get thrown back in the seat for a 1/4 second, then accelleration lets off, then i get throw back, then let off, and that over and over again. it's not smooth.
i will pull the carb and look at it again, see if slide sticks
i did have an inline gas filter but took it out.

Is it a new tank or an old one. Most petcocks have a screen in them. You might want to take it apart and see if the screen is partially stopped up.

djpennin, Just a thought, but try loosening the gas cap or check that it is properly vented. Of course, be careful to not get a lapful of gas. It may be gulping like those fancy water coolers with the jug on top. Boofer

I was also going to suggest maybe the gas cap was sealed. They need to be vented to allow air in to keep the gas flowing.

Gas cap is vented, c'ept the vents were crappy i had to expand them then pop a hole directly in the middle of the cap.
thanks all!
