I've used auto oil in motorcycles, clutch wasn't quiet as smooth but it really does hurt unless you drag race a lot.

Some auto oils are acceptable and some are not.
To top off 1/2 qt, I wouldn't worry to much about, fill'er up.
but avoid the "energy conserving" kinds.
and if that's all there was, change at 1st opportunity which means drive to a m/c shop and drop the oil right there in their parking lot and realy piss'm off.   Grin
Otherwise, diesel oils would be 1st choice.

You do know that oil (any sort of oil) expands slightly when it gets hot.  You should check your oil hot each time, as hot is most of the time and cold requires you to remember to do it before starting out.

Checking hot then cold would make you wonder where the oil went.  If you added oil because of this scenario, then checked it hot the next time, then you get the dreaded "omigosh I've over-filled it !!" syndrome.

Actually the only time I over filled it was when I changed the oil and filter. The dealer said it would take 2.1 qts. I added 2 and the site glass was full. I had to suck out about 60cc to get it down to max.

To check it hot, how long do you have to wait for all the oil to drain down for an accurate reading?

I check my oil level pretty much every fill-up.  By the time I've pumped the 2 gallons or so, the oil is mostly in the crankcase.  So that's a 2 or 3 minute wait.

Great! That will get me a ball park guess when I am adding oil. I was adding a few ozs and then had no idea how long to wait to see if I needed to add more.

So the answer to my original question is 1/2 qt. Let settle 2-3 minutes.

Works for me!!  Thanks people!

I love my way,.......after draining, dump 2 qts in it, and forget it. I just couldn get so critical over a few ozs of oil.

Since I have the infamous oil leak, I know it's time to add when I don't see any oil on the fins and battery case after a ride.

In my bike, two quarts is perfect.  It has never held what the manual says it should hold.
