So here is what I am thinking. What if I got someone to cut my sissy bar and weld in some extensions then chrome it back up all nice and pretty. Anyone ever done this? Good idea bad idea?

I would just make a new bar from stock bent to shape

Weld up, get chromed, put it on!

Yep, square stock is cheap.  I've thought about doing the same, if I could get some cheap brackets, or just make my own brackets too.

If only the guy at work that was going to mill up goodies for me hadn't gotten himself fired! :'(

I dont see a weld on a sissy bar as some hazard. I wouldnt be afraid to do it myself, at all. I still wouldnt want to put a hitch on a trailer, but a sissy bar doesnt carry loads like that. The bar will flex before the weld sees any real serious loads.

I would probably just add to the old one if the brackets will be hard to get hold of. Any imperfection where its joined will be very obvious once chromed, so that would be a tough thing to do well. Maybe some decoration to hide it? Or hack it off right at the mounts & weld down there? Do you have a torch w/ rosebud & a vise & tools to work the steel yourself? You could put twists in it & dress it up, or just bend it & get it done. You got a welder?

Well hmmm I don't want to go all easy rider but It needs to be twice as tall as it is. As it is now it is just a pain to bungee anything to it. I also have what is supposed to be a sissy bar bag, but it is so short it barely reaches the sleeve on the bag.

I have put a bit of weight aginst the stock one. Riding two up along with a stack of stuff on the rack. I would want to be sure that my passanger leaning on it and and days worth of goodies are not going to go flying off on the freeway.

I would not be doing it myself I would be going to a shop to get it done.

I doubt seriously you could find a welder who makes a living welding who couldnt weld it & make it safe.
