handlebars and  grips

how do you get the end caps off the handlebars without destroying them ?
I just got these 10 inch z bars off of ebay (they're only $62) and i'm dying to put them on. the pull back is only 4 inches or 25 degree's so i can tell i'm going to love the positioning compared to the buckhorns.

but the clymers goes into very little detail on end cap and grip removal.
I know people out there have done this job before so lets hear your tips
pleeease

is there even an end cap on the throttle side ? or is it part of the throttle assembly ?

ps  i want to reuse my old grips

I'd rather have one
big one than four
small ones.

I think the end caps are an integral part of the grips. But why would you want to take them off? Just loosen the two screws on the control block and the grips slide right off.

They are push on.  May have a bit of glue.  If you're having trouble, wrap a leather belt, fuzzy side to grip and twist and pull.
For the rubber grips themselves, use rubblng alchohol.  Pry up an edge and dribble a bit in there, then twist and wiggle it around.... You have 20 or 30 seconds before it evaporates...
Not enough time?    add some more.
Use it again to re-install.

just to clarify i can use a leather belt cinched down to remove the end cap(s) ? is there an end cap on the throttle side ?

then once i've done that, the left side grip can be pealed back using rubbing alcohol ?

mmmm alcohol

oh and what about bar end weights ?

A leather belt can be used as a makeshift strap wrench.  You can also buy a strap wrench for a few bucks if you want.  They are usually a rubber strap.  The function is to add grip,.. fold the belt in half to make a loop, put the grip end in the loop, think of the loop as the box end of a wrench, slide your hand up the belt to the loop and use your hand to squeeze it tight, then turn.

End caps on both...
Rubbing alcohol correct....
Bar end weights are not stock on a Savage,... they screw on.  Most bars are not threaded on the end, so many aftermarket bar ends have an expanding mechanism that fits in the tube and is tightened from the end.
You must get them for 1" bars to fit the Savage...

My '07 has hard plastic kinda grips. One of the end caps kept falling off, so I added a little crazy glue, pushed it on, twisted it, and it seemed to lock in, and has stayed on so far...  Back to the plastic grips though - do the older models have more traditional rubber ones?  I think I'd prefer that.  More "grip"on the grip, iykwim.
