Oil Drain Screw is... screwed!
06/29/09 at 12:49:25

I'm trying to do my very first oil change but the oil drain is totally messed up. I tried ti unscrew it but it is very "roundish" so none of my tools can help. Besides, I don't want to go to hard on it and make it even worse...

What should I do? Should I take it to a mechanic? They must have some power tools to remove this, no?

Buy a new drain plug/screw then use some vise grips on the old one.

When you are reefing on in the plug with the vice grips, be ready for when it lets go. You'll end up bashing you knuckles if you are not careful!!!  Trust me on this Grin

Ditto on the vise grips, one tool I would never ride without. So strong that you could make a temp foot peg out of it if need be.

I just ordered a Magnetic oil plug. Next step is buying a vise grip.

Thanks again for your feedback and help.

If the head of the plug is so messed up a wrench wont stay on & the vise grips slip off, file 2 flats on the head & put a crescent wrench on that. Wiggle the wrench & use pliers to tighten it to the MAX, then puyt a cheater on it & drive Down on the cheater. The location of the plug can confuse folks, so the wrench goes toward the front tire & then drive down.

I poked around that website and the model search doesn't include the Savage 650 / Boulevard S40.  They do have two different Suzuki plugs.

Could someone who has actually used their plug let them know which one fits our bikes?

Shop around to find a 14 mm combination end wrench or box end wrench with a six point box end.  If you don't find one on the shelf, you can have a good hardware store or auto parts store order one for you.  Look at the upper wrench in this image.  The six point wrench contacts more area of the flats on the head and does a better job.

Maybe someone wrenched on it with a 9/16" wrench which is just a bit too big?...or a cheapo open end wrench which spread under load?...or pulled hard on it the wrong way?  I don't see how the drain plug can be grabbed good enough with Vise Grips to get it out.  If the six-point end wrench doesn't do the job, take it to a pro before it is damaged worse.  Be sure you have the new plug to re-install and a new gasket for the drain plug.

Do you know which way to turn the drain plug to remove it?  Always, when looking straight at the head you need to turn it counterclockwise...lefty loosey.

I don't know if you would be able to get those into the space between the oil drain plug and the frame. But it is still a good idea to have a set of those in your tool box.
