I never get a backfire with my shutdown technique.

Come to a stop, keep applying front and/or rear...gently let out the clutch and let then engine die

Front there...you figure out the rest.

Never had a backfire once with this method...

Can anyone tell me if this causes any harm?

I'd rather have one
big one than four
small ones.

I love the sound of my baby the way she is. I seem to get one pop changing from 1st to second and two pops changing from second to third, what a blast!!!! It's all part of the character of the bike. lol

well put! character is what i like!! it's funny how a little bike makes ALOT of noise! mine is the stock pipe, but has about 5 holes drilled in the end....VERY SWEEEET!!

and i wouldn't trade the backfire for anything!

I didn't mind the backfire, I just didn't like the way it ran before I got the mix just right.

I think of the backfire as a safety device.  If I'm coming up on a car or group of cars sometimes I squeeze one off to announce my presence.
Backfires may also save lives.  It's always good to keep one in the chamber...

I can almost pop one off on command.
Almost every time I roll off to idle... pop.

Oh look an open window... pop!
Hey, I'm here... pop!
OK guys, edge over just a little... pop!

Grin  I can usually get mine to pop if I pull in the clutch and goose the throttle a little.  I haven't noticed any exhaust leaks, at least not obvious ones, so this may mean the carb need different jets.  It runs ok anyway, and the header hasn't started getting any darker than it was with the old muff, so I'm in no hurry to start tweeking on it quite yet.

Mines an obvious exhaust leak.
I'm enjoying myself too much to fix it.   Smiley
