Might be possible to remove the fender w/o removing the tire, but I wouldn't want to try. Just take it off, it will be a whole lot easier. Removing the rear tire is pretty straight forward, just make sure when reassembling to get everything back in the right place. correct spacer placement (left vs. right), drum brake in position over the "tab" on the frame, etc. Oh yeah, don't forget about the rectifier. It lives under the rear seat. Gotta move it too. I think someone put it in their air box?

Assuming you have a good bike stand to work with, secure the front tire, loosen the rear axle and the alignment screws. Remove the brake line from the swing arm on the drum, then jack up the rear of the bike. I use the back of the engine. Nice little groove right there that my jack sits in nicely. Once you have it jacked up, only a couple of inches, mind you, remove the rear axle. This will let the rear tire drop free. make sure you keep every in the correct order, namely the spacers. Left needs to go back on to left, and right onto right. Roll the tire forward and remove the drive belt. Just let it hang there. It won't hurt anything. After you've done all that, just roll the tire backward to get it out. Might want to remove the license plate bracket as well. Tends to get in the way. The fender is held on by 4 bolts. Easy as that.

You've got to remove the fender rails as well, as the wiring for the rear signals runs through them. Might want to do that before anything else. the less work on the jack, the better. Less chance for an accident.... And you might want to look up rear tire alignment as well. It's pretty straight forward, but if you don't do it properly you'll mess up your tire pretty quick! (don't trust the "alignment marks" on the frame. They've already been proven to be inaccurate by others on this site!)

Check the tech section. I got the specs for my stand there. $20 and 30 minutes. Some have used rope and tent stakes, though i wouldn't recommend that.

I use some hooks I screwed into my garage cealing beams and then use tie-down straps around the handle bars. To lift the bike I use a regular car floor jack under the bike then slid a car ramp under it. Surprisingly stable.

SS, add your city and state to your profile. Makes it easier, laws vary by state, and if there's someone who knows they can advise you.

Be much easier to remove the fender if you remove the wheel. I've found it's easier to remove the shock to pull the belt off, but eh do it how ever you want.

You can either make a bracket and make a side mount like bobbert
or mount the bracket to the underside of the seat.

But if you can afford a trailer fender...
