Windy Day + Bad Parking Angle = Question

Hi Guys, I was moving on Saturday to my new place, parked the bike on a sidewalk out back, and being a very windy day it decided to take a ride without me. It didn't get very far to say the least.

The result is a broken rear view mirror (at the bar, ripped right off still screwed to the base), a tail light hanging off the back, and a jacked up peg and grip. The day was going so well to that point. :'(

Anyone have an idea how much this little bout of stupidity might cost to fix?

Maybe it will not do that again! You have already done a good thing by posting here. I suggest posting in the marketplace for the parts and see what you can find there. If anyone has stuff they will part with it will be less than new.

In the future, leave the bike in first gear. Roll it forward as far as possible, to get all the slack outta the "driveline", drop the stand & lean it over. Then it cant roll forward off the stand. I got off on an incline, dropped the stand, & as I turned to walk away, it started rolling, I jumped back & caught it, but my knee dented the tank a little.

Yeah, I learned a lesson alright! It was most likely in neutral. I've had the thing bout a year now, and this was the worst thing I have done to it. Right now I am just mulling over fixing it myself or claiming the insurance. Chances are I will fix it myself since those four parts combined seem expensive, but the insurance bump could be worse in the long run.

I'll take a closer look at it tonight. So far I haven't been able to talk to it...It's been staring at me through the window.

My husband told me before that he parks in 1st, but I still park in neutral. Now I feel awful that I'm going to start parking in 1st--because I saw this post here. I must be some kind of azzzhold.

Maybe I'll just pretend like I'm following his good advice. Yep. That's the ticket. Anyway, thanks. I have no desire to learn the hard way.

Use the kill switch? I generally put the bike in neutral, and use my left hand to turn the bike off via the key. If I'm in first, I'm going to need that left hand on the clutch. So....kill switch?

When I park at work I always park it in gear just so something like that doesn't happen. At home its garaged though.

It's generally easier for me because I park the bike in 1st gear... I do the same with my Jeep and my Festiva too, except with them, I'll pull the emergency brake as well.

I've parked on a fairly good incline at the local leather store (bike leather, not "recreational", get y'all's minds outta the gutter! ), and it was always there when I came back.

these seem like odd questions .... kill it how ever you want - kill button or key switch or pop the clutch - but before you walk away set the bike in first - roll it a little back and forth to make sure - that's reasonable yes?
