Engine RPM @ 65 MPH
03/09/09 at 06:29:10

There has been some kvetching on the Forum about the high engine RPM of the Savage/S40. I happened to remember that Motorcycle Consumer News publishes engine RPM at 65 MPH on many of the motorcycles they test. They note that the RPM is at 65 MPH true, not indicated. Unfortunately their test of the Savage did not include that data, so I calculated it using the Owner's Manual. I then dug through about five years worth of tests and produced a spreadsheet of over a hundred bikes. The RPMs varied from a little over 2000 for a couple of Harley models to over 8000 for a 250 Ninja. The Savage, with my calculated 4300 RPM at 65 MPH, was just about in the middle. I do not know whether there is a way to post the spreadsheet (it is in OpenOffice) on here, but if someone does I'll be happy to post it. I thought about cut-and-paste, but I suspect the Forum will destroy the formatting.

I use 'print screen' to capture the screen then paste it in new document in a program that can save 'jpg'

MS paint will do what you want it to and it is really easy.

Hit print screen on the keyboard. Open MS paint, go to edit, click on paste. Crop or do whatever you want to, then save as. Save it where you want and presto changeo magic!

I can tell you that 75 is 5000....   Roll Eyes

This weekend I test drove my bike "Before & After" doing the TKat brace.  Ran the interstate to do rain grooves.  needless to say I was keeping up with traffic no problems when I thought,  "wonder how fast I'm going " ....  look down and it said 75, and then I looked up at the tach,  5000....

I tried a  simple cut-and-paste into a post here, and it did as I expected. It compressed the lines leftward so columns don't line up. Depending on the width of your display, it probably does some line-wrapping, too. I have said before I won't even bother to open an account on any of the "services" such as Photobucket.

Google Docs to the the rescue!  I took the liberty of sorting it by brand and adding in some average calculations.

Looks a lot better. I had sorted it from low to high by RPM at 65 mph, which is how the S40/Savage ended up in the middle. I thought about calculating the mean and standard deviation, too, but didn't. Thanks for finding the way to do it.

I did some further playing with my spreadsheet, and added a column to it. It is Average Feet Traveled per Power Stroke. It has to be average, because most V-twins and many parallel twins do not have even firing orders. The S40/Savage travels about 2.66 feet every time it fires, and is bested only by an 883 Sportster. If anyone is interested I'll post the whole thing.
