question changing hadlebars & risers on savage
02/25/09 at 08:53:59

i have a 2003 savage and i'm wanting to change the buckhorn bars to the s40 dragbars and risers.

my question is will the s40 risers and bars fit on a savage? also is it a direct swap or are there any mods i'll need to do to get them switched. also is it a pretty easy swap?

thanks in advance. i did a search and came up w/ nothing!

I just finished this and it was pretty easy. Here is what I learned. If you can make sure you get the stock suzuki drag bars for the easiest swap. Also you will need either the stock risers of a nice set of aftermarket risers to make it easy. Here is one thing I found out after doing the swap. First my bars were not the stock bars and the risers were the stock extentions but I did not have the stock bar clamp (I guess that is what it is called) so I had to fiind some bolts to fit the application. With all of that said. The stock mirrors are useless now. I was not aware of this but now I am having to look at bar end mirrors so I can see behind myself. I wish I was aware of that before I changed. Just wanted to make you aware. Smiley

ok, well the reason i ask is because the local suzuki dealership said i would run into problems.

he said the savage has a 7/8" bar while the s40 has a 1"

so he said i would need all new controls, grips, etc. if i went with the s40 bars & s40 bar risers.

is he right or does he just not know what hes talking about?

He has no idea what he is talking about. The only deference between the Savage and S40 is the name and now a two tone paint job. Both take 1 inch bars.

I have a 2004 savage not S40 and I have 1" bars. There is a thread in the tech section that has a link to bar size let me find it. I think all savage/s40's have always had 1" bars.

Go back to the guy at the dealership.  Approach him in a disarmingly fashion.  Don't say anything to him just smile.  When he smiles back, kick him in the shin closest to you then run away.  He'll know exactly why you did it.

Or a 86-88 flat bar & riser.  Back then it was an option.  Model numbers had either a P or F, pullback or flat.

Actually, the old setup used same bar clamps as pullbacks (no metal in between) but had extensions.   To see what I mean, go to one of the on-line parts websites.   The old setup allowed you to clamp accessories (Tach) in between the risers.
