New Battery Box
02/14/09 at 18:36:26

Anyone whipped up their own custom battery box in place of the stock piece?

I removed the air box and I was going to relocate the box back a little bit... But I'm thinking that if I went with a full custom box, I could make it even smaller (or mount it sideways) instead of in the stock box.

I don't need the tool box cover, so it's just taking up more space.

Ideas and suggestions appreciated. Smiley Thanks!

Funny you should bring this up. I have one in the prototype stage right now and should be making it within the next few weeks. I am taking my time and trying to get it right the first time.

Easiest and cheapest way to do it is to start out with cardboard. Then you can get all your dimensions and everything squared away. Test fits and everything are really easy that way.

Not sure what battery you currently have but there are small sealed batteries you can buy that can be flipped anyway you want them too....

Yup, I've got one of those Big Crank sealed batteries. I figure I could lay it down and put it sideways or something.

I looked at some chopper setups to get an idea... I just need something that'll hold it in place tight, probably end up painting it black.

Mine is dry battery and it's under the seat. I used the tool box cover to hold it in place there. If you find a pretty battery, you can rig something up with those L-shaped profile bars, so the battery is visible. Also you can use leather strap to hold it and a minimal bracket beneath... Whatever you want the flavor of your final product to be.

I was thinking about leaving the battery exposed... Could always just spray that flat black too.

I'm undecided I guess. Maybe I'll just get the stock box to work.

3M has a pretty decent chrome tape product thay you can get wide enough to go around the battery.  Or wrap it with the gloss black version.

I have the sealed big crank and I just moved my battery box all the way back at an angle where the air box used to be. Lots of open air now and the cone filter should look real sharp right there.
