Custom bar end mirror/turn ver 1.0 finished
02/14/09 at 08:14:46

Here's the setup I decided to go with for now.  I had these LED turn signals already and I made the brackets from some chromed bar I had laying around.  I think I'll end up swapping out to a chrome set of these LED turns.  The mirrors are convex so you can see quite a bit of area.  I haven't gotten around to taking off my stock front turn signals yet. (looking at the pics I see I've got to center my bar again and tidy up the cables and wires!)

Here you can see where I was soldering then heat shrinking the turn signal wires which the mirrors encase and hide. You can see the side profile of the turn signals.

Looks good, I like the lines (not the wires).  Cool
I think some trailer lights may fill the whole front of the mirror though.
Then little things may produce enough light, I don't think have enough surface area to be seen clearly.  Shocked  you know objects in the mirror are closer then they appear kinda things, little lights far away big lights 'where did he come from'   Grin
I've been toying with the idea of getting some of those walley world chrome spots to put on those fork mounts once the sigs are off.

Last week I bought some small amber LED pods just for this purpose but they were only just as bright as the stock front turns.  I wanted brighter than stock.  The ones I have on now are brighter than both the stock lights and the new ones.  They are easy to swap out so I'm gonna keep looking to see if I can find some that I like even better.

I decided not to modify the other bar end mirrors.  It's definitely do-able but I like the way these blend in, having almost a bar-end weight profile compared to the mickey mouse ears.

now what are you going to do for mirrors?..... could you still use the bar-ends bolted on top of the signal mounts?..... they might hide the back-side of the signal stalks...

Yep. They are convex on the outside to provide even more view.  You know, just like those mirrors you see up high on the wall in stores to make sure you don't shoplift!

There's about the same mirror real estate on those, and in some cases more, than on many of the custom mirrors like:

They have slightly more viewing area than my previous stemmed custom mirrors that are in some of the ealier pics of my bike (without saddlebags pics) on this site.  So, to me it's just a relocated mirror.  Also, I found some new flush mount LED turn signals today.  I'll put them on tomorrow and post some more pics.

Yeah, the close up pic I posted doesn't show it with the mirror installed.  The mirrors are in their own housing.  It's in the hollow space that the wires are hidden.  The mirrors are similar to those rectlagular, convex blindspot mirrors you can pic up at auto stores.  These are just a little bigger, made with real glass and start to become convex more on the outside.  I think they are high quality mirrors tghat augment the big mirrors on 18 wheelers.

Convex mirrors like you put on the auto's mirror's to see the blind spots better???    Have you taken it for a ride in traffic?   Can you see enough with them??

And Jim,   I know the bike was called "Savage" before A S40, but I don't think you need to pen it up.   Just the rider.....   Wink

Ha ha.  I guess you can tell by the environment that I live out in the country!

Nah, they are not true blind spot mirrors.  They don't have enough curve to be blind spot mirrors.  They have a slightly convex shape that allows more visual area.  These are the mirrors.  They measure 3" wide by 1 7"8" tall.

These are the old ones I used to use:

You can see how the new ones give me more mirror. The old ones worked great except I'd have to lower my arm a little to get a full view of the action behind me.  That's why I started down the path of the bar end mirrors- I wanted to improve the visual.     The new ones have a bigger mirror than my old ones above and the slightly convex shape makes them work even better.  I rode about an hour this afternoon and I'm quite happy with them.  It's like riding with mirrors that seem like they are about 50% larger than they actually are.

I changed out to these LED turns.  They have a smoked lens.

I'm liking it, but turn them around so the pointy part is outward.

That would indicate which way your turning just in case they didn't understand from the bike blinking on that side, you know how cagers are.
